(Roberts Field at Steinbrenner Stadium) - The Lead: A blast by sophomore James Santoro (Tewksbury, N.J.) with 9.5 seconds remaining in the second overtime period secured MIT's 8-7 come-from-behind win over UMass Dartmouth in a non-conference men's lacrosse game on Wednesday afternoon. Santoro and junior Oliver Heins (Fair Haven, N.J.) both produced two goals and an assist for the Engineers while Stephen Kolodko paced the Corsairs with one goal and two assists. HOW IT HAPPENED: - UMass Dartmouth opened the game with four unanswered goals. Mike Rizzo put the Corsairs on the board after almost three minutes expired and then Jeff Wenzel increased the lead midway through the quarter. The cushion grew when Donovan Prozinski connected on a pass from Kolodko at the 11:33 mark of the second stanza. Kolodko followed this up with a solo effort of his own with just under nine minutes remaining. MIT ended the shutout courtesy of Santoro's unassisted marker with 4:15 on the clock. - The Engineers put together their own four-goal run during the third quarter, going up 5-4, at the end of the frame. Heins started the rally at the 12:04 mark, which was followed by a strike from first-year Teddy Corcoran (Harrison, N.Y.) exactly 40 seconds later. Junior Gavin Vandenberg (Elmhurst, Ill.) posted MIT's next two goals as he buried the equalizer on a feed from Heins with 6:39 on the clock and then gave the hosts their first lead of the day with 3:16 left. - The Engineers' cushion grew to 6-4 courtesy of a goal from sophomore Liam Miller (Pasadena, Calif.) after 3:13 elapsed in the fourth quarter. UMass Dartmouth ended its scoring drought when Wenzel redirected a pass from Kolodko at the 9:05 mark and then Zak Wirsen knotted the game 40 seconds later. The Corsairs regained the lead on Kevin Swenson's man-up strike with 3:11 left to play. MIT won the ensuing face off and tied the game at seven after Santoro found Heins with 2:17 remaining. Sophomore goalie Lukas Drexler-Bruce (Denver, Colo.) stopped a shot by Prozinski with just over a minute to go, helping preserve the deadlock. - Both teams had chances to record the game winner in the first overtime, but the Engineers' shots were off the mark while both of UMass Dartmouth's attempts were saved by Drexler-Bruce. - In the second extra session, Drexler-Bruce made three saves, the last occurring with 31 seconds on the clock. After a successful clear, first-year Tory Lentine (Flemington, N.J.) found Santoro who buried the game-winner with 9.5 ticks left. INSIDE THE NUMBERS: - Senior Adam Gumbardo (Babylon, N.Y.) posted five goals and three caused turnovers while sophomore Ben Dwyer (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) collected six groundballs. First-year Andrew Palleiko (Hopkinton, Mass.) was 12-of-16 in face offs and amassed 10 groundballs as Drexler-Bruce ended the day with 16 saves. - Wenzel provided two goals as Rizzo notched one goal and one assist. Prozinski tallied a team-high eight groundballs while Matt Clement registered five groundballs and three caused turnovers. Alexi Fauzey also produced three caused turnovers as Ted McCaffrey totaled 17 saves and four groundballs. - MIT ended the day with advantages in shots (40-23), shots on goal (25-23), groundballs (41-36), and face-off wins (16-4). - The Engineers were 17-of-21 in clear attempts and did not convert their only extra-man opportunity of the game. - The Corsairs were 18-of-27 in clear attempts and went 1-of-2 with an extra player. - MIT is now 3-4 all-time in double-overtime games.
