The Basics • Score: #15 Johns Hopkins-13, #23 Michigan-12 (OT) • Records: JHU (6-5, 6-5 B1G) • UM (3-7, 3-7 B1G) • Location: Ann Arbor, MI • U-M Lacrosse Stadium • The Short Story: Freshman Abbey Hurlbrink scored with 52.8 seconds remaining in overtime to complete the comeback as the Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team beat host and 23rd-ranked Michigan, 13-12, on Thursday afternoon. How it Happened • Trailing by four after back-to-back Michigan goals with 17:47 to play, Hopkins scored four goals in less than nine minutes to tie the game. Graduate student Maggie Schneidereith got things going when she scored a one-timer on the doorstep off a feed from senior Aurora Cordingley at 17:05. A little over five minutes later, Schneidereith found a cutting Keegan Barger, who then picked the far post while fading to her right. Graduate student Mackenzie Heldberg then scored consecutive goals to knot the score at 11. • Molly Garrett answered and put the Wolverines back on top when she scored from the left alley at 6:53. Heldberg responded with her fifth of the game to tie the game at 12 with 21.4 seconds on the clock. She dodged from behind the cage, beat her defender inside and scored from in-tight. Hulbrink then ended the game when she converted her second free position goal of the game. • The teams traded goals early and it was 2-2 at the 21:31-mark. Michigan then got a pair of goals from Caitlin Muir to grab a 4-2 lead. Heldberg cut the lead in half with a free position goal at 17:48, but the Wolverines answered with four straight to push out to an 8-3 lead. Schneidereith ended the run with a quick-stick goal with 2:25 to play, but Kaitlyn Mead scored with 12.3 seconds to play to send Michigan into the half with a 9-4 lead. • Hopkins came out firing in the second, with three straight goals from sophomore Maeve Barker and Cordingley to pull within two at 24:33. Mead and Shaylah Marciano then scored back-to-back goals for the Wolverines to push their lead back to four at 11-7 with 17:47 to play. What it Means • Hopkins is above .500 for the first time this season and secures the number three seed in next week's Big Ten Tournament. • The Blue Jays improve to 4-1 all-time against the Wolverines and is 2-1 in Ann Arbor. • Schneidereith is now tied for fifth in school Division I history with 142 career goals. Cordingley is now tied for 11th in with 110 goals and Heldberg is tied for 17th with 95 goals. Heldberg is also tied for 14th with 149 career points. Inside the Box Score • Heldberg (5g) and Cordingley (2g, 3a) led the Blue Jays with five points each while Schneidereith added three (2g, 1a). Hurlbrink (2g) and Barker (1g, 1a) also had multi-point games. Hurlbrink is the first player to score an overtime goal since March 1, 2017. • Sophomore Madison McPherson had a team and career-best seven draws, while also picking up four ground balls. Senior Keegan Barger had three ground balls and three caused turnovers and Hurlbrink tied her career-high with three takeaways. Senior Kathleen Garvey finished with nine saves, including six in the second half when JHU outscored Michigan, 8-3. • Muir led Michigan with five points (3g, 2a) – all of which came in the first half. Mead notched a hat trick and Garrett scored twice. Erin Daly controlled a game-high eight draws and Mariah Sweeney made 11 saves. Up Next • Hopkins wraps up the regular season on Saturday, April 24.
