LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Bellarmine went toe-to-toe with Richmond over the first 30 minutes, but the Spiders pulled away in the second half to record a 16-9 victory in a Southern Conference game at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium on Saturday afternoon. After Richmond scored the game's first goal, the Knights nearly matched the preseason SoCon favorites shot for shot in the first half with Mitch Savoca's goal with eight seconds remaining in the second quarter giving the visitors an 8-7 cushion at the break. Following halftime, however, it was all Richmond--at least on the scoreboard--as the Spiders surrendered just two goals over the final 30 minutes while matching their first half total of eight scores. Richmond (6-3, 3-0 SoCon) got a six-point performance from Teddy Hatfield with three goals and three assists while Ryan Lanchbury and Savoca each rang up four goals on the day. Bellarmine senior Stephen Votto paced the Knights' attack recording a hat trick on just four shots while Luke Legnard and Riley Seay each contributed two goals and an assist. Landon Trout added a goal and an assist, and defenseman Collin Murray netted his first collegiate goal by intercepting a pass and taking it coast-to-coast for the score. Assists were added by Morgan Macko, Ian Miller, Blake Roshkowski and Brayden Brown. Both goalies--Jordan Dondoyano for Bellarmine and Blake Goodman for Richmond-- turned in 10-save performances with Goodman picking up the win in the crease. For the game, the Spiders owned big advantages in ground balls (35-22) and faceoffs 18-11), but the Knights held their own, statistically-speaking. Bellarmine actually won the turnover battle 14-12 with total shots favoring the Spiders 40-39. Bellarmine falls to 0-8, 0-2 in the SoCon and travels to Macon, Georgia next week to take on Mercer. The Bears won their first game of the season today, knocking off VMI 16-8.
