The Terrier men's lacrosse team opened the 2019 season in style, smashing a number of records en route to a 21-3 victory over Franciscan University on Saturday afternoon. Overall in the game, the Terriers broke four team records, including goals (21), shots (65), ground balls (65) and goals allowed (3). Hiram shattered their previous goals mark of 19 which they set last season in a weather-shortened triumph over Franciscan. Their previous mark of shots in a game was set at 55 while their previous record for ground balls was 50. Individually, junior Tim Stucky began 2019 with a bang, tying the school record for points in a game with 10, a mark he now shares with teammate Hunter Jenkins. Stucky finished the 2019 opener with seven goals and three assists, coming just one goal shy of his own single-game record of eight. Hiram controlled nearly every aspect of the game. Senior Alex Meehan was stellar in the face-off circle, winning 21 of 27 chances. The Terriers also converted 18 of their 19 clear chances and held a decided advantage in ground balls (65-25). The first half of action was dominated by the Terriers as Hiram made the most of their first 30 minutes of the season. Just three minutes into the game, the first Hiram goal of the season was tallied by Jenkins on a man-up opportunity. He then assisted on Justin Dionne's first of the year less than 30 seconds later, and Hiram held a 2-0 lead. Hiram would snag four more scores before the end of the quarter. Jenkins would find the back of the net for his second of the game off an assist from Jaret Walland. Walland would then score his first of the season, before Jonah Austin and Tim Stucky each got into the scoring column. In the second quarter, Stucky, who was the Terriers leading point scorer in 2018, found the net three more times, including the final two of the opening half. Austin added his second of the game in the frame, while Horace Johnson also found the back of the net for his first of the year. Overall in the opening half, the Terriers outshot the Barons 39-13 in the first two quarters. Junior goalie Liam Osborne played stellar between the pipes, pitching a first-half shutout while making nine saves. He finished the game playing 35 minutes, allowing just one goal and making 11 stops. Franciscan would break the shutout with 7:04 remaining in the third quarter before Hiram tallied three more goals. Stucky connected with the net two more times, including one off an assist from Dom Medina. Dionne would add the other two goals of the quarter and Hiram would hold a 16-3 lead at the end of three. The Terriers once again held Franciscan scoreless in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Barons 5-0 to round out the final score. Freshman Gage St. Leone tallied his first-career goal to open the fourth quarter, which was then followed by another from Austin. St. Leone would add another off an assist by Stucky, before Stucky himself gave Hiram 20 goals in a game for the first time in program history with 6:39 to play. Walland then rounded out the scoring, finishing Hiram's day with 21. The three goals allowed by the Terriers on the day set a new program mark defensively. The previous low was four, which came in a 13-4 victory over Mount St. Joseph last season. Hiram's 18-point margin of victory was also the highest in school history. Along with Stucky's performance, multiple Terriers shone brightly throughout the game. Dionne finished the afternoon with six points (4g/2a), while Austin added five (3g/2a). St. Leone posted four points (2g/2a) in his Terrier debut, while Jenkins and Walland each added three points (2g/1a). In the net, Osborne finished with 11 saves, while Keagan Finegan added one. Defensively, the Terriers forced 11 turnovers, led by four from Johnson. Johnson also led the ground ball department with 11 while Meehan finished with 10 and Liam Pinney added nine. The Terriers will get back to work on Wednesday, February 27 as they travel to Pittsburgh to take on La Roche College. The matchup with the Red Hawks is slated for 4 p.m.
