AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse trailed 2-0 to start the contest but rattled off the next five goals to defeat UAlbany 12-9 at Garber Field on Tuesday afternoon. The win moves UMass to 2-3 on the year, while the Great Danes drop to 1-3. The Gorillas had eight scorers combine for the squad's 12 goals with no individual putting up more than two in a balanced effort. Senior Gabriel Procyk led the way with four points on two goals and two assists, while junior Mike Tobin contributed three points (2g, 1a) and sophomores Grant Breyo and Shane O'Leary had two goals apiece. Sophomore Caleb Hammett won 16 of 21 faceoffs and snagged 10 groundballs, senior Matt Weigand had a goal, an assist, five groundballs and a caused turnover and graduate student Sam Eisenstadt logged three groundballs and three caused turnovers. Facing a 2-0 deficit, Breyo got UMass' offense rolling with his seventh of the season off a dish from Procyk at the 4:43 mark of the first quarter, extending his scoring streak to five straight games to start the year. Graduate student James' Caddigan's goal with 10 seconds remaining in the first capped the five-goal run for the Maroon & White, bringing the score to 5-2. UAlbany opened the second with a tally from Logan Tucker as the teams traded goals three times in the stanza before senior Tim Hoynes extended the Massachusetts lead to four at 9-5 in the closing moments of the half. Senior Anthony Sericolo gave the Gorillas' their largest advantage of the day, 10-5, to start off the scoring with 11:08 to go the third quarter. The Great Danes' made a push at a rally with a three-goal run to close the gap to two, but Tobin and Procyk helped preserve the win with scores at 4:08 and 2:00 of the fourth quarter before UAlbany closed things out with a man-down goal at 1:20. Jack Pucci paced the Great Danes with a hat trick on the day, while Amos Whitcomb and cOrey Yunker had two goals each. UMass out-shot UAlbany 33-26 and 30-22 in shots on goal and was successful on 18 of 19 clear attempts to the Great Danes' 19 for 23. Junior Matt Knote made 10 saves in between the pipes for the Gorillas and Tommy Heller turned aside 14 for UAlbany. Massachusetts continues its homestand on Saturday, March 12, when the squad will play host to LIU at 1 p.m. on Garber Field.
