BALTIMORE, Md. – Duke junior attackman Justin Guterding scored a career-high tying 10 points from four goals and six assists as the unseeded Blue Devils cruised past No. 6 seed Johns Hopkins 19-6 in NCAA Men's Lacrosse Tournament first round action at Homewood Field. Duke advances to its 15th NCAA quarterfinal. Guterding's 10 points are the second most by a Blue Devil in NCAA Tournament history and mark the third time this season the Garden City, N.Y., native has recorded double-digit points in a game. He pushes his season total to 94, tied for fifth in Duke single-season history. He is just the fourth Blue Devil in program history to reach 90 points in a season. “We were honored to play here at Homewood Field today,” said head coach John Danowski. “I thought our kids responded being down 2-0 early in the game. Kyle Rowe gave us possession a bunch early and our second midfield was productive early. I think our team relaxed when that second group was making plays.” Duke will play the winner between Ohio State and Loyola in Hempstead, N.Y., May 20. Joey Manown chipped in four goals and an assist, while Sean Lowrie had three goals and an assist in the victory. His four points match his career-high, while four tie his best. Duke's second midfield provided four of its first eight in the game. Johns Hopkins took advantage of a couple early Duke turnovers to go up 2-0 after 3:47 of action. Lowrie put the Blue Devils on the board at the 10:24 mark off an assist from Guterding. That tally sparked a 6-1 run to finish the opening frame with a 6-3 advantage. Two-way player Sean Cerrone tied the game off an assist from Manown and Guterding gave the Blue Devils their first lead on a pass from Jack Bruckner at the 6:29 mark. Lowrie, Manown and John Prendergast tacked on three more in the final 3:22 for the three-goal edge. Duke, thanks to dominant play from Kyle Rowe at the faceoff X and outstanding defense, continued to fire on all cylinders offensively in the second quarter. The Blue Devils needed just 32 seconds to score a man-up goal and added three more in a span of 2:32 for the 10-4 lead midway through the second period. Reilly Walsh and Kevin Quigley capped the scoring in the first half to send the Blue Devils into the locker room up 12-5. The Blue Devils extended their lead to 16-5 in the third quarter as Duke's defense held the Blue Jays to just four shots in the period. Two of the first four goals in the stanza came on the extra man, which finished 4-of-4 for the day. Rowe was outstanding at the X, winning a season-high 18-of-24 draws and picking up a season-best 15 ground balls. Duke overall won 19-of-28 faceoffs and won the ground ball battle 34-25. In goal, Danny Fowler made eight saves in 53:49, while Turner Uppgren came off the bench to make two stops. Kieran Eissler led Johns Hopkins with two goals, while Shack Stanwick had one goal and one assist. Faceoff will be at noon or 2:30 p.m., on ESPNU.
