In a rematch of last year's NCAA Second Round matchup, the 10th-ranked Wesleyan men's lacrosse team was upset by Western New England on Saturday afternoon on Citrin Field, 13-10. The Cardinals mounted a late comeback but it wasn't enough as they dropped to 2-1 on the year. Tom Martello led the way with three goals and one assist. Nick Gamba helped guide the Golden Bears to victory with nine points on six goals and three assists as they improved to 3-1. GAME HIGHLIGHTS: Wesleyan scored the first goal of the game as Logan Geller fired one into the bottom right corner just 55 seconds into the contest. However, it would be the last lead for the home team as Western New England went on a 3-0 run to close out the first quarter before opening the second with another tally as they went ahead 4-1. The visitors outscored Wesleyan 5-2 in the second as Gamba contributed to each goal with four scores and an assist. With 31 seconds remaining in the half, he wrapped around the net and made a diving score. Just 18 seconds later, he assisted on a goal by Mike Bannon to give the Golden Bears an 8-3 halftime advantage. Wesleyan had another early score to open the second half as Geller dished it off to Pat Doherty at the 14:11 mark. After a 2-0 run by Western New England, the Cardinals responded with a 2-0 stretch of their own, but the Golden Bears closed out the third quarter with two unanswered as they led 12-6 after three. Wesleyan outscored the visitors 4-1 in the final 15 minutes including two goals from Jake Sexton just 43 seconds apart at the six-minute mark. However, despite the momentum on the Cardinals' side, they were unable to score the rest of the game as Western New England held on for the win. INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Wesleyan held a 17-10 edge in faceoffs as freshman Julian Barba was excellent, securing 5-of-7. The Cardinals also owned a 38-25 advantage in ground balls and 47-36 lead in shots. Both teams turned the ball over 16 times and both went scoreless on man-up opportunities. Sean McCusker was terrific in net for the visitors as he made 12 saves. Otto Bohan stopped 13 shots between the posts for Wesleyan. UP NEXT: The Cardinals are back in action on Wednesday, March 11 as they host Scranton at 3 pm.
