Seniors Ryan Reuling (Groton, CT) and Eric Caldwell (East Moriches, NY) scored seven and five goals, respectively, and the Western Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team opened the season with a convincing 21-8 victory over Nichols College at the Westside Athletic Complex on a chilly Wednesday afternoon. The Colonials, now 1-0, pelted Bison's net minders with 70 shots on the day including 20 from Caldwell and 19 more from Reuling. Early on in the contest, Caldwell scored his second goal of the day and registered his 200th career point. Freshman Keith Ditta (Smithtown, NY) and Timothy Yannucci (Lindenhurst, NY) each contributed a pair of goals for the winners. Yannucci led all players with three assists for the Colonials. Rounding out the scoring for the Colonials, with one goal apiece, were Christian Sparacino (Manorville, NY), Zak Santoemma (Madison, CT), Trey Aronow (Holbrook, NY), Zach Perry (Bethel, CT) and Jesse Weaver (Highland, NY). Sophomore midfielder Cian Keohane (Yorktown Heights, NY) led Nichols with three goals and an assist for four total points. Brendan Coates (Grafton, MA) added two goals for the Bison. Junior goalie Perry Cassidy (East Setauket, NY) earned the victory for WestConn after making 11 saves before yielding the pipes to Justin Tarsi (Danbury, CT) in the 53rd minute. Tarsi made three saves in six minutes while Sean Young (Lindenhurst, NY) closed out the final minute in the circle for the Colonials. Griffin Jasin (St. Charles, MO) made 18 saves in 46 minutes of action. Stephen Getsick (Melrose, MA) saw his first collegiate action in net for the visitors for the final 14 minutes. He mad three saves. WestConn returns to action this Saturday, February 22 when it plays host to Sage College. Face-off is slated for 1 pm.
