The Widener University men's lacrosse team downed the Swarthmore Garnet by a score of 11-9 in its home opener at Quick Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Pride advances to 2-0 overall for the first time in the past 15 years. HIGHLIGHTS Connor Heisman led the Pride in scoring with seven points on three goals and four assists. First year Jayce Dyer posted his first-career hat trick, finding the back of the cage three times by the end of the first half. Chad Allison added two goals and a dime. His seven goals through two games leads the team. Paz Gismondi also had three points on a goal and two assists. Kyle Pollick and Nick DiIorio both chipped in with a score a piece. Carter Landry had 14 saves and a 60.9 percent save percentage in the win. HOW IT HAPPENED The Blue and Gold came out hot, finding the scoreboard at a minute and a half in off a goal from Gismondi. Four more goals off from four different players in the first put the Pride up 5-0 after a quarter of play. The Garnet was able to fire off 15 shots in the second quarter, but eight big saves from Landry held them to just two scores as Widener entered halftime up 7-2. The Pride scored early and often in the second half as DiIorio and Hesiman both delivered goals in the first three minutes and Heisman racked up another at the 6:23 mark in the third. The Garnet made a run in the final quarter with five goals of its own, but Widener was able to fend off the late effort and come away with its second win of the season. UP NEXT The Pride heads to Chestertown, Md. to take on the Washington College Shoremen on Saturday, February 29th. Opening faceoff from Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
