A balanced offensive attack and a strong opening half lifted the Vassar College men's lacrosse team to a 13-8 victory over SUNY Oneonta in non-conference action on Saturday at Weinberg Turf Field. The win moves the Brewers to 2-2 on the season, while the Red Dragons are now 1-2 overall. Vassar opened the game's scoring with four first period goals. Senior attack Michael Mullen (Dresher, PA) got things going at the 10:28 mark, converting a pass from rookie Riley Olds (Los Angeles, CA). The Brewers made it a 2-0 advantage at 9:04 as junior attack Spencer Duryee (Whitehouse Station, NJ) fed the ball to sophomore middie Logan Hyde (Manhasset, NY). Following an unassisted score from sophomore midfielder Connor Deehan (Westwood, MA) at 3:25, Mullen added his second of the contest with 1:16 to play and give Vassar the solid lead. The Brewers continued to answer in the second period as Deehan converted a Hyde pass at 13:54. Mullen then buried a Deehan feed of his own for his third of the contest at 9:11 and a 6-0 VC lead. The Red Dragons broke onto the scoreboard at 4:39 as freshman attack David Guest (Niskayuna, NY) grabbed a pass from junior midfielder Ryan MacDevitt (Sayville, NY) and fired it in for the man-up score, but Vassar responded just 30 seconds later as Olds converted a Deehan feed for the 7-1 edge at the half. Oneonta continued to battle as junior midfielder Thomas Fay (Nanuet, NY) narrowed the Brewers lead to 7-2 at 13:10 of the third quarter. Vassar answered as Mullen scored back-to-back tallies, both assisted by Hyde, to build up the home team advantage to seven (9-2) with 6:03 to play. Fay closed out the third quarter by gaining a goal back for the visitors, and Oneonta continued to roll in the fourth as junior midfielder Andrew Stamatel (Glens Falls, NY) recorded one on the man-up for a 9-4 score at 13:16. Mullen notched his sixth goal of the game off a feed from Duryee at 11:51 to give the home team a six goal edge (10-4), but the Red Dragons continued to press in the final frame as McRae scored at 8:12. The Brewers saw senior midfielder Matthew Lowery (Bel Air, MD) score the first of his two goals straight off the face-off at 8:05 and Olds added another score at 6:22 to make it a 12-5 margin. The final 3:27 of the contest saw the Red Dragons find momentum as MacDevitt, McRae and junior attack Chris Higgins (Farmingville, NY) all scored, but Vassar held on for the five-goal victory. Pacing the effort for the Brewers was Mullen, who recorded a game-high six goals. He also led the way with 11 shots in the contest. Deehan added two goals with two assists, while Hyde had a goal with a game-best four assists. Lowery scored two goals off the face-off, added a game-best 10 ground balls and went 16-22 from the circle. In goal, sophomore Devin Lee (Clinton, NY) earned the victory, recording 11 stops in 55:35. Freshman Aidan Gallagher (Hanover, MA) came on for the final 4:25 of relief and made two saves. For the Red Dragons, McRae posted two goals with one assist, adding four ground balls and a caused turnover. Fay added two goals, while MacDevitt had a goal and an assist. From the circle, sophomore Timothy Shanley (West Hempstead, NY) went 7-24 with a ground ball, while in goal, the Red Dragons saw their starter Sebastian Gomez (White Plains, NY) finish with two saves in 24:01 of action. Sophomore Jordan Berson (Old Bethpage, NY) came on for the final 35:59 of relief and made five stops. Vassar is back in action on Wednesday when it hosts the second game of a three-game homestand. The Brewers will welcome Martime to Weinberg Turf Field for a 6pm tilt. Oneonta is also in action on Wednesday, traveling to Allentown, PA for a 7pm game at Muhlenberg.
