Three freshmen made their collegiate debuts by combining for seven goals to push the Transylvania men's lacrosse team to a season-opening 14-3 victory over the Marietta College Pioneers on Saturday afternoon at Pat Deacon Stadium. The 11-goal victory is the largest margin of victory for a Pioneer men's lacrosse team in a season opener in program history. With the win, Transylvania improves to 1-0 on the season while Marietta falls to 0-1. Picking up the victory in net for Transylvania was Michael Webb, who tallied six saves against three goals allowed on Saturday. The freshman trio of Dalton Hubbs, Ethan Patton, and Will Warner combined for seven goals and two assists in the Transylvania debut, including a hat-trick from Warner. T.J. Toivonen turned in an electrifying performance in the opening game of his senior campaign, scoring a pair of goals, scooping up six groundballs, and tallying a team-high four caused turnovers in the Transylvania victory. Marietta began the game with a stunning attack, picking up the ground ball off the opening face-off and driving down the middle of the field to just in front of the goal where Marietta's Jimmy Border slipped a shot past Webb for a 1-0 advantage only six seconds into the game. However, Transylvania responded soon thereafter with a rousing response, first with an equalizer from Warner just moments later. Patton, Quinn Fox, and Bryce Lowe each scored in the closing moments of the quarter to give the Pioneers a 4-1 lead. The four-goal counter in the first quarter would set off a string of 10 unanswered goals by the home team as Transylvania displayed its Pioneer superiority. The home team continued to stoke the offensive intensity throughout the second quarter, outscoring Marietta 5-0 with all five scores coming from different Pioneers. Transylvania outshot Marietta, 11-5 in the quarter and held a 47-20 shots advantage for the entire game. Jacob Miller opened the second half by scoring his first goal of the season to put Transylvania ahead, 10-1. The two sides would go on to trade goals throughout the period, bringing the score to 12-3 at the end of the third quarter. With the game safely in hand, Warner commenced the fourth quarter by completing his hat-trick with an agile drive towards goal that ended in a score for the Pioneers. Lowe capped off the offensive outburst for Transylvania by scoring his second goal of the day, a strike that pushed the final tally to 14-3 in favor of the Pioneers. Transylvania is back in action on Saturday, February 22, when the Pioneers travel to Memphis, Tennessee to matchup against the Rhodes College Lynx. Opening face-off is set for 2:00 p.m. Eastern time, 1:00 p.m. local time at Crain Field on the campus of Rhodes.
