THE BASICS: - Score: MIT 11, University of New England 9 - Records: MIT (3-1); UNE (4-1) - Location: Biddeford, Maine (UNE Blue Bolt Field) - The Lead: A four-goal run that spanned the first and second quarters created enough of a cushion to help the MIT men's lacrosse team hold on for an 11-9 victory at the University of New England on Saturday afternoon. In a balanced scoring performance, sophomore Liam Miller (Pasadena, Calif.) posted two goals and one assist while first-year Teddy Corcoran (Harrison, N.Y.) registered one goal and two assists for the Engineers. HOW IT HAPPENED: - UNE opened the scoring after 1:10 elapsed, but MIT replied with back-to-back goals to take the lead. First-year Bennett Stankovits (Rumson, N.J.) connected on a pass from Corcoran and then senior Jonathan Monahemi (Great Neck, N.Y.) put the Engineers in front with an unassisted man-up marker with 10:56 on the clock. The Nor'easters netted the equalizer just over two minutes later, however, a solo strike from Corcoran gave MIT a 3-2 edge with just under four minutes left in the quarter. - The Engineers generated three unanswered goals during the first 4:46 of the second stanza. Junior Gavin Vandenberg (Elmhurst, Ill.) redirected a feed from senior Adam Gumbardo (Babylon, N.Y.) and then Corcoran set up sophomore Andy Shin (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.). First-year Tory Lentine (Flemington, N.J.) capped the burst courtesy of a pass from Miller. UNE responded with its own three-goal spurt during the last 8:01 of the frame, entering halftime trailing 6-5. - The third quarter was a back-and-forth affair as both teams scored twice. Miller found the back of the net after 41 seconds elapsed as the small cushion held until a man-up goal by the Nor'easters with 5:25 on the clock. During the next 1:02, sophomore James Santoro (Tewksbury, N.J.) recorded an unassisted marker, however, UNE replied with a man-down goal to come within 8-7. - The exchange of goals continued in the fourth quarter as the Nor'easters trimmed their deficit to 10-9 with 2:29 left to play. After a series of possessions, Santoro scored with 59 seconds remaining to secure the win. INSIDE THE NUMBERS: - Monahemi and Stankovits both produced one goal and one assist while senior Joe Vasile (Webster, N.Y.) collected a game-high seven groundballs. First-year Andrew Johnson (Dover, Mass.) posted three groundballs and three caused turnovers as classmate Chris Perrino (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) notched four groundballs and two caused turnovers. Sophomore Ben Dwyer (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) generated three groundballs and two caused turnovers while first-year Andrew Palleiko (Hopkinton, Mass.) was 10-of-18 in face offs and gathered six groundballs. In net, sophomore Lukas Drexler-Bruce (Denver, Colo.) recorded 10 saves. - UNE had a 36-33 edge in shots but MIT led the way in shots on goal (23-19), groundballs (38-36), and face-off wins (12-11). - The Engineers were 14-of-20 during their clearing attempts and 1-of-4 in extra-man opportunities. - The Nor'easters were 10-of-24 during their clearing attempts and 2-of-7 with a man up. UP NEXT: - MIT will host Curry College on Tuesday, March 10 at 4:00 p.m. STAY CONNECTED: - For the latest on MIT Athletics, follow the Engineers via social media on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube.
