Junior Ryan Tierney tallied four goals and one assist, sophomore Dylan McIntosh added three goals and classmate Robert Casey recorded 11 saves to lead Hofstra to a 14-10 victory over the Utes of Utah in the Pride's home opener at James M. Shuart Stadium Saturday afternoon. Tierney, who recorded his 100th career point on his third goal of the day, tallied three goals and one assist in the first half and one goal in the third for his 12th career hat-trick. McIntosh tallied his first goals of the year-all in the second half-and his fourth career hat-trick. Casey recorded double-digit saves in his second career start and now has a 6.00 goals against average this season. He also recorded an assist on Michael Altmann's third quarter goal. Sophomore Brian Herber was excellent on face-offs, winning 18 of 26. Hofstra improved to 2-0 on the season. The first-year Utes of Utah (1-2) were led by Josh Stout with five goals while Jake Cantlon added two goals and two assists. James Sexton contributed one goal and two assists. Utah goalie Liam Donnelly, a New York native, recorded 15 saves, including eight in the first half to keep the game close. In a game that featured just two tied scores and two lead changes, Hofstra led 5-3 midway through the second quarter following a James Philbin man-up goal. But the Utes answered with three consecutive goals, the third, fourth and fifth goals of the contest by Stout to take a 6-5 lead with 1:17 to play in the half. Hofstra responded with a man-up goal by Riley Forte and a goal off the face-off by Mark Ellis in the final 0:15 to take a 7-6 lead into the locker room at halftime. The two goals at the end of the first half would be the start of something good for the Pride-a five-goal spurt-as McIntosh, Altmann and Tierney would boost the Pride lead to 10-6 with 3:42 to play in the third. After Sexton scored with 0:40 left in the third to close the gap to 10-7, Hofstra opened the fourth with goals by McIntosh and Ryan Kinnard in the first 5:40 to push the lead to five at 12-7. From that point on, the two teams exchanged goals for the 14-10 final. Hofstra outshot the Utes, 46-33 and picked up 42 ground balls to Utah's 29. The Pride converted three of six man-up opportunities Hofstra will return to action next Saturday, February 23 when the Pride travel to face the Wildcats of Villanova (1-1), who defeated top-ranked and defending national champion Yale in overtime Saturday, 11-10. Game time at Villanova Stadium is noon. Notes - Ryan Tierney now has recorded 63 goals and 39 assists for 102 points in 30 career games at Hofstra. - Red-shirt sophomore Riley Forte recorded his first collegiate goal in the second quarter and added two assists. - Freshman Nick Williams, sophomore Brian Herber and junior Michael Altmann all tallied their first collegiate goals to join Forte. - Hofstra and Villanova will be meeting for the 15th time next Saturday with the Pride holding an 8-6 series advantage.
