A five-goal run in the middle of the game helped push the No. 10 Towson University men's lacrosse team past visiting Hofstra University for a 10-9 win to open Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium. Towson (6-3, 1-0 CAA) got a pair of hat tricks from attackman Brody McLean and Grant Maloof, who added an assist for a four-point afternoon. Senior faceoff specialist Alex Woodall became the program's all-time faceoff wins leader as he won his 508th draw in the Black and Gold. Hofstra (3-7, 0-1 CAA) had a four-goal afternoon from Ryan Tierney, while Sterlyn Ardrey finished with three points on two goals and one helper. Pride keeper Bobby Casey logged 10 saves. How it Happened After an initial getting to know you phase, the Pride took a 1-0 lead five minutes in as Tierney scored unassisted at 9:50. Maloof scored back-to-back goals to give Towson its first lead of the afternoon as he potted shots at 9:05 and 8:30 of the first quarter. The Pride surged past Towson with three unanswered goals from three different sources, Ardrey, Joey Elarde and Tierney in succession. Hofstra led 4-2 after 15 minutes. The Tigers pulled back within one at 13:51 of the second quarter on McLean's first of the afternoon. The Pride struck back on Tierney's third for a 5-3 lead, but Maloof trimmed the deficit down to one on a dish from Greg Ey at 12:33. Hofstra posted back-to-back goals from Elarde and Ardrey for a 7-4 advantage, but the Tigers snared the moment late in the half as McLean scored again with less than two minutes for a 7-5 halftime hole. After a Hofstra penalty late in the second quarter, the Tigers scored just nine seconds from Timmy Monahan on a Maloof assist. Towson continued its offensive onslaught with two goals in a 45 seconds stretch from McLean and Ey. The former finished the scoring for the third quarter with an assist from ANdrew Beachem at 3:01 for a 9-7 Tiger lead. The Tigers finished a six-goal burst with Brendan Sunday's 24th goal of the season at 12:51. The Pride pulled back within one on goals from defenseman Michael Altmann and Tierney, but Towson's defense held firm and did not allow the equalizer. Behind the Numbers Like the scoreboard, the game was close in nearly every statistical category. Towson out-shot the Pride 35-33, including 10 in the deciding third quarter. Towson grabbed 25 ground balls while the Pride had 23. Woodall finished with six ground balls. The Tigers had a much better afternoon in clears, gaining the zone 21 out of 25 times. Hofstra had six failed clears to finish 14 of 20. Turnovers plagued both sides as each team was charged with 17. Towson had eight in the fourth quarter, opening the door for the Pride, but Hofstra committed seven miscues. Towson's defense smothered the Pride and forced four shot clock violations. Woodall finished the game winning 11 of the 21 draws while his counterpart, Brian Herber, won 10. The Tigers killed off one extra-man opportunity, a six-on-four for the Pride. Towson scored on its only man-up chance of the day. Towson improved to 8-0 in CAA home openers under coach Shawn Nadelen, while the program improved to 17-1 in its first league game at home since joining the CAA in 2002. Towson is 43-0 in games in which it scores in double figures while limiting opponents to single digits. The Tigers ended a three-game slide while improving to 3-1 at Unitas Stadium this season. Prior to Saturday's game, the Tigers recognized the family and friends of the late Carl Beernink, who passed away suddenly in July. The captains presented the family with a number 30 jersey in a pregame ceremony. Up Next for Towson The Tigers head to the Nutmeg State next week to continue CAA action.
