The visiting Keene State College Owls came out flying building an 11-2 lead in the first quarter and went on to defeat the University of Southern Maine Huskies 23-11 in Little East Conference men's lacrosse action Friday afternoon at Hannaford Field. The win was the seventh straight for the Owls who ran the table in conference play to finish the regular season 8-0, and 9-5 overall. Keene State will be the top seed for next week's LEC tournament and host the semifinals and finals next Friday and Saturday (May 3-4). Southern Maine dropped its second straight to conclude the regular season 6-8 overall and 3-5 in conference play. The Huskies now must wait for the results of other games Friday night (and possibly Sunday) to see if their conference mark will get them into a first-round playoff game next Tuesday. Sophomore Joe Nutting (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) scored three of his game-high eight goals in the opening quarter as the Owls took command. Nutting also dished out two assists to finish with 10 points. Junior Anthony Marcella (Hull, Mass.) tallied four goals and passed off two assists. Ten different Owls etched their name into the goal-scoring column. Senior Jake Schoenberg (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat) led the Huskies with four goals, and classmate Paul Leonardo (Groton, Mass./Groton-Dunstable) had three goals and one assist. Junior Tristan Dundas (Abbotsford, B.C.) found the net twice. USM rookie goalie Alex Bonin (South Berwick, Maine/Marshwood) registered 16 saves as he was under siege much of the game. Keene State employed four goalies with each playing a quarter. Sophomore Chase Chamberlain (Bow, N.H.) started and made one save in the opening quarter. Sophomore Alex Fawcett (Londonderry, N.H.) followed making two saves in the second. Rookie Will Kane (Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y.) stopped four shots in the third, and junior J.J. Tinney (Natick, Mass.) recorded one save in the final quarter. Keene State piled up a huge 60-31 edge in shots, and won the battle for ground balls 40-35. Southern Maine, paced by sophomore Derek Davidson (Hollis, N.H./Hollis-Brookline), won 22 of the 38 faceoffs.
