In its first game in 25 days, Florida Tech battled tough against No. 1 Tampa on Saturday night, but was unable to keep pace with the Spartans in the second half and fell 14-9 at the Naimoli Family Athletic Complex. The Panthers drop to 2-4 overall while UT improves to 7-0 on the season. Reid Chaconas paced Tech with four goals including all three of the Panthers' tallies in the second half. Florida Tech's all-time leading goal scorer added another accolade to his already impressive resume on Saturday as he became the first Panther to reach the 100-goal mark in program history. He now has 101 goals for his career. The Crimson & Gray got two goals each from Luke Jayne and Zach Rozgonyi. Justin Williams had a goal and an assist while Brandon Harry, Andy Stump and Cristian Torres dished out one assist apiece. Kyle Sergio finished with four ground balls and a caused turnover and Josh Vetter collected three ground balls and one caused turnover. Brennan Banks had two ground balls and a caused turnover, while JP Panchookian and David Welsh each recorded a ground ball and one caused turnover in the game. Vincent Palermo had an active game in between he pipes for the Panthers, finishing with 16 saves and four ground balls. Ethan Tosheff and Jack Maranto combined to go 9-25 on face-offs with Tosheff winning 8-21 attempts. The Panthers got off to a strong start and led 2-0 just 3:23 into the game on unassisted goals by Williams and Jayne. Tampa quickly responded with four unanswered goals to grab a 4-2 advantage with 8:09 left in the first quarter. Rozgonyi ended the Spartans' run with a rebound goal off a shot by Andy Stump that was saved and bounced high in front of the goal. The freshman collected the loose ball and one-timed it into the net to make the score 4-3 with 4:22 remaining in the first. Tampa ended the opening quarter with a 5-3 lead but not before two late penalties on the Spartans gave Tech a two-man advantage and possession at the start of the second. The Panthers took just 20 seconds to strike on the man-up as Chaconas scored on a rocket shot off an assist from Harry to cut the margin to 5-4 with 14:40 left in the half. A few minutes later, Jayne slipped past his defender and scored his second goal to tie the game up at 5-5 with 12:44 to go in the second. UT responded with back-to-back goals by Owen Miller to grab a 7-5 lead. On an unsettled situation, Williams was able to find Rozgonyi on a cut across the crease for his second goal of the game and draw the Panthers within one, 6-7, with 6:30 to go. The score would remain the same as the teams went into halftime. Just over five minutes into the third quarter, Chaconas found himself wide open on the crease and Stump fed him the ball for the easy goal that tied the contest at 7-7 with 9:53 remaining in the frame. The Spartans again answered with a 2-0 run and corralled a 9-7 lead with 6:23 to go in the third. Chaconas completed his hat trick just over a minute later off an assist from Torres to make it a one-goal game with 5:11 left in the quarter. Tampa added two more goals late in the third and carried an 11-8 advantage into the fourth quarter. Trying to keep his team in the game, Chaconas scored his fourth goal on a powerful shot near the top of the box to make it a two-goal margin, 11-9, with 10:02 remaining. However, the Spartans locked down the Panther offense the rest of the game, while adding three more goals to their total, to remain undefeated on the season. Tampa finished with an advantage in shots (44-36), ground balls (36-27) and face-offs (16-9), in addition to converting less turnovers in the game (13-18). The Spartans were successful on 100% of their clear attempts (18-18) while the Panthers converted 20-23 attempts. Tech went 1-5 on man-up opportunities while holding UT scoreless on its three man-up situations. Florida Tech returns to action next Friday, May 7, with a road game against Rollins College in Winter Park. The matchup is set to begin at 1 p.m. at Alfond Stadium.
