Stevenson men's lacrosse senior Marc Poust recorded a career-high 18 saves while senior John Harrington netted six goals to tie the single-game NCAA Tournament record in program history as the 12th-ranked Mustangs erased a first half deficit en route to a 15-9 victory over Kean in the NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse First Round Saturday afternoon at Mustang Stadium. The Cougars (10-2) took the early lead as Brady Moore scored his team leading 27th goal of the season at the 12:19 mark. Down the other end, senior Lewis Anania tied the game, scoring an unassisted goal. Kean had the first man-up opportunity after a cross-check penalty but senior Marc Poust stopped the only shot attempt. With three seconds remaining in the penalty, the Mustangs (9-1) were whistled for a second one-minute penalty, which Moore converted on with 4:11 left in the quarter. After Kean won the opening face-off to begin the quarter, Poust made his seventh save of the contest leading to a transition goal by junior Connor Nelson. Senior Luke Ensor had the helper. The Cougars scored back-to-back goals in a 29-second span, the second coming on the man-up, to take a 4-2 lead at the 11:23 mark. Stevenson earned its first man-up opportunity and saw senior John Harrington fire a shot off the post before the hosts turned the ball over. Following the 12th turnover of the game by the Mustangs, Kean took a three-goal lead as Connor Batjer finished in front on a pass from Michael Shapiro. The teams combined for three goals in a 1:01 span early in the third quarter, with Stevenson striking twice. On the Mustangs first possession of the second half, Nelson found senior Jacob Tatum in front as Tatum scored low to the far left post. Just 12 seconds later, the Cougars answered before junior Ryan Coleman scored unassisted with 12:34 remaining to get within, 6-4. Stevenson scored back-to-back goals for the first time in the game as Nelson found Harrington for a tough angle shot as the senior got the Mustangs within one. Anthony Porter recorded his fourth point of the game and first goal, netting an unassisted goal on a bounce shot. In transition, Ensor found Nelson in front of the net for an open shot but Nelson made an extra pass to sophomore Dillon Linhardt for an even better shot to get back within one yet again. The Mustangs tied the game at 7-7 with 6:09 remaining in the quarter on the second goal of the day by Harrington. With 3:30 remaining in the quarter, Stevenson took its first lead of the contest as junior Cam Leydig had a quick turnaround shot up high to the top left corner. Coleman picked up the assist. On the opening possession of the fourth quarter, Poust made a point blank save to keep the hosts lead at two, his 16th stop of the contest. Harrington scored twice to open the quarter scoring, including a wrap-around for his fifth goal of the game at the 7:28 mark. The Cougars stopped Stevenson's six-goal run just 14 seconds later as Moore scored the third man-up goal of the day for the visitors. Harrington netted his sixth goal of the game and sixth goal of the second half at the 5:50 mark to push the Mustangs lead to 12-8. Tatum recorded a hat trick after scoring back-to-back goals just 40 seconds apart. With 1:51 remaining, Leydig scored the second man-up goal of the game for the Mustangs, extending the hosts lead to, 15-8. Kean outshot Stevenson, 36-32, while the Mustangs held a 21-16 edge in the second half. The Mustangs improve to 17-5 at home in the NCAA Tournament and 5-0 against unranked teams. Stevenson netted seven third quarter goals as Kean entered the game with the 13th-best scoring defense in the country, allowing just 6.64 goals per game. After totaling 16 first half turnovers, the Mustangs committed just three in the second half with zero in the fourth quarter. Harrington finished with a career-high six goals for his sixth game of the season with at least three goals. With three goals in the contest, Tatum has recorded a point in 50 of his 53 career games in a Mustang uniform. He is one goal shy of moving into the top-10 for goals in a career. Poust's 18 saves rank third in an NCAA contest in Stevenson history, besting his 16 set in 2019. Nelson finished with five points on one goal and four assists, marking just the seventh time a Mustang player has totaled at least four assists in a NCAA game.
