Tied at 10 entering the fourth quarter, St. Mary's scored the final two goals of the game to top Elizabethtown College, 12-10, in non-conference action Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Blue Jays fall to 1-1 on the season, while the Seahawks improve to 2-1 overall. For the second straight game, sophomore Micah Ballew paced Elizabethtown's offense, scoring a team-high three goals. Sophomore Nick Cost tallied a team-best four points on goal and three assists. Sophomore Jude Brown led St. Mary's with two goals and four assists. Sophomore Jack Brocato registered four points (3 G, 1 A). Junior Ben Claffee also recorded four points for the Seahawks on two goals and two assists. It was a flurry of goals to start the game for the two teams, as sophomore Danny Gilbert took the opening face-off straight to the cage for the 1-0 with just seven seconds ticked off the clock. The two teams traded the lead six times in the first quarter, but the visitors managed to take a one goal advantage (6-5) into the second quarter, as Brocato collected a pass from Brown and fired home the goal with five second remaining in the period. After a Cost goal to start the second, senior Mike Scrafano pulled the Blue Jays back in front with an unassisted tally with under five minutes remaining in the second quarter. The Seahawks used a 3-0 run to move ahead by two, before Ballew closed the deficit to one with the final goal of the half, making the halftime score 9-8. Sophomore Abe Hubbard pushed St. Mary's lead back to two in the opening five minutes of the second half, but Elizabethtown buckled down and managed to tie the game before the fourth behind goals from Ballew and sophomore Wes Mills. That would however be the end of the scoring for the Blue Jays, as the Seahawks scored the only two goals of the fourth quarter for the 12-10 victory. Sophomore Danny Gilbert won 13-23 (56.5%) face-offs and picked up a game-high nine ground balls. Senior Tom Mahoney (1-1) made nine saves on 38 shots for the Blue Jays. Sophomore Kyle Preis (2-1) made 11 saves on 40 shots for the Seahawks. Elizabethtown has a quick turn-around for its next game, battling No. 18 Dickinson on Wednesday, Feb. 26. Opening face-off is set for 4 p.m.
