The Lead: Lucas Habich scored with 15 seconds remaining in regulation and then set up Cole Pecora for the overtime game-winner, giving Springfield College a 16-15 victory over MIT in NEWMAC men's lacrosse action on Saturday. First-year James Santoro (Tewksbury, N.J.) amassed nine points on two goals and seven assists for the Engineers, tying the program record for assists in a game while also breaking the Institute record for assists in a season. Habich led the way for the Pride with two goals and four assists. HOW IT HAPPENED: - Cameron Glover registered the opening goal after 1:37 elapsed but a strike by junior Aidan Westley (Palos Verdes, Calif.) kicked off a 5-1 run by MIT. Springfield closed the gap to 5-4 courtesy of goals by Patrick Watson and Joe Hawley during the final two minutes of the quarter. - Santoro set up first-year Jack Montinaro (Riverside, Conn.) for a man-up goal and then found sophomore Oliver Heins (Fair Haven, N.J.) during the first 1:51 of the second stanza. The Pride responded with a 7-1 run to enter halftime with an 11-8 lead. Hawley accounted for four goals while Glover and Habich both posted one goal and one assist. - Springfield carried the momentum into the third quarter as Jack Vail connected on a feed from Pecora after 1:28 expired. MIT battled back, eventually going ahead on sophomore Gavin Vandenberg's (Elmhurst, Ill.) shot over his back shoulder with 1:52 left in the frame. - The Engineers increased their lead to 14-12 just over a minute into the fourth quarter when Santoro redirected a pass from junior Jonathan Monahemi (Great Neck, N.Y.). Vail cut the Pride's deficit in half at the 8:40 mark, however, Monahemi scored on Westley's pass with 4:18 left. Over a minute later, Matt Huggett buried an extra-man goal, making the score 15-14. After an exchange of possessions, Glover set up Habich for the tying goal with 15 seconds remaining in regulation. - MIT won the faceoff in overtime and saw a shot by sophomore Mark Heatzig (Boca Raton, Fla.) go wide while a blast by Montinaro was saved Cole Finerty. Following a Springfield timeout, Pecora buried the game-winner with 1:46 on the clock. INSIDE THE NUMBERS: - Vandenberg finished with four goals, one assists, three groundballs, and two caused turnovers while Montinaro totaled two goals and three assists. Monahemi posted two goals and two assists as Heatzig and Westley both notched two goals and an assist. Junior Adam Gumbardo (Babylon, N.Y.) registered four groundballs and two caused turnovers while classmate Joe Vasile (Webster, N.Y.) collected six groundballs. Sophomore Luke Gianni (Henderson, Nev.) went 21-of-29 on the faceoff "X", equaling his career-high in faceoff wins which came against Springfield last year, and scooped up 12 groundballs. In net, first-year Lukas Drexler-Bruce (Denver, Colo.) tallied 11 saves, two groundballs, and one caused turnover. - Hawley recorded five goals while Vail produced three goals and two assists. Glover contributed two goals and two assists as Matt D'Andrea was 8-of-19 in faceoffs and had four groundballs. Finerty racked up 11 saves, three groundballs, and one caused turnover. - MIT ended the day with advantages in shots (49-36), groundballs (41-22), and faceoff wins (24-10). - The Engineers were 9-of-10 during their clearing attempts and converted two of their four extra-man opportunities. - The Pride was 15-of-17 during its clearing attempts and also went 2-of-4 with a man advantage. - Santoro eclipsed the previous MIT record of 37 assists in a season which was set by Harris Stolzenberg '17 in 2015 and was then tied by Stolzenberg in 2017.
