The Hiram College men's lacrosse team secured a 17-8 victory over Franciscan in their first game of the season, Saturday afternoon. Five Terriers recorded a multi-goal performance in the matchup against the Barons. Junior Dom Medina led the Terriers with a career-high four goals and an assist. Senior Hunter Jenkins finished with six points, three goals and three assists. Sophomore Gage St. Leone added three goals and two groundballs. Hiram outshot Franciscan 42-32, finishing the afternoon with 40 groundballs, and a game-high 11 caused turnovers. The Terriers had a strong opening quarter allowing just two goals in the first 15 minutes of play. Hiram posted back-to-back goals by St. Leone and senior Jaret Walland to take an early 2-0 lead. The Barons got on the board with 13:10 in the quarter to cut the Terriers lead to 2-1. The Terriers offense shined in the last seven minutes with Hiram shooting four unanswered goals to stretch their advantage to 6-1. Four different Terriers scored, including senior Horace Johnson, Jenkins, Medina, and freshman Trevor Flugum off an assist from Medina. Franciscan would tally one last goal in the frame inside the final two minutes (6-2). The Hiram defense played a pivotal role in the win over the Barons. The Terriers held Franciscan scoreless in the second quarter, leading 9-2 going into halftime. Despite Franciscan scoring six of their eight goals in the last half, Hiram kept them at bay tallying eight goals with six coming for the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, the Terriers scored two goals from Jenkins and St. Leone to secure their 17-8 victory over the Barons. Hiram will be back in action on Wednesday, February 26, when they host La Roche. The matchup is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
