Clay Stevenson set a new program record with 27 saves in the Monarchs' 17-10 loss to visiting Guilford College Tuesday afternoon in non-conference men's lacrosse action. The Quakers outlasted Methodist by scoring seven of the game's final 10 goals. Guilford had a 11-6 goal advantage in the second half. Stevenson faced a career-high 65 shots en route to topping the previous record of 22 set by Liam Von Hoene in 2019. Offensively, Connor Glenn led the attack with four points (three goals and an assist) while Jesse Leyble added three goals and Mark Chatt claimed three assists. THE ESSENTIALS Final score: Guilford def. Methodist, 17-10 Records: Methodist 1-3; Guilford 4-1 Location: Monarch Stadium; Fayetteville, N.C. HOW IT HAPPENED Stevenson was absolutely fantastic, coming away with several saves in situations that looked like surefire Guilford goals. By halftime, he already had 17 saves, which was two shy of his career-high for a total game. His first half performance was instrumental in keeping the score close as the Quakers entered the third stanza with just a 6-4 lead. After Glenn (with a beautiful pass from Matt Pemberton) scored in the second quarter to give Methodist a 4-3 lead, the Quakers rattled off four straight goals to regain the lead for good. Chatt connected with Glenn to stop the streak early in the third quarter, making it a 7-5 game. Methodist scored two goals in the span of 36 seconds to seemingly regain momentum. Bryce Kephart scored followed by Carter Favreau to cut the deficit to 9-7 with six minutes remaining in the third period. The Quakers closed the game with a dominant 8-3 run over the final 21 minutes. The span featured two separate streaks of three consecutive goals and five fourth quarter scores. The Monarchs were on the scoreboard first in the game after goals from Leyble and Favreau gave Methodist a 2-0 lead. Guilford's Bryce Craig managed to score goals that sapped Methodist of its momentum. Craig scored the first Quaker goal, had two consecutive scores that turned a tied game into a 6-4 lead, and then returned with a fourth goal which gave Guilford a 9-5 edge, their largest lead of the game at that moment. STAT FACTS The team that wins possession usually wins the game and this game was no different. The Quakers had a 22-8 advantage in faceoffs, a 51-33 edge in ground balls, and committed less turnovers (11) than Methodist (29). Along with Glenn, Leyble, Chatt, and Favreau, Pemberton had at least two points after he registered two assists in this game. Alex Smiarowski, a senior and Tyler Bennett, a freshman, registered their first points of their careers following a goal and an assist, respectively. Scott Shaffer, Andrew Mayefskie, and Marco Romero each recovered a team-high five ground balls. Thyree Carson had four. Mayefskie's three caused turnovers were a team-high while Shaffer and Patrick Rowell each caused two. UP NEXT The Monarchs host Randolph College at Monarch Stadium Saturday, February 29 at 1 p.m., the second of three straight home games for Methodist.
