The lightning that delayed the start of the Princeton-Siena men's lacrosse game for 90 minutes had nothing on what Michael Sowers did once the game finally started. Sowers scored Princeton's first three goals and never let up, going for six goals and five assists to lead the Tigers to a 19-10 win over the Saints Tuesday night on Sherrerd Field. The six goals and 11 points were career highs for the junior attackman, and the 11 points were the second-best total in program history, behind only the 12 points that Elmer Weisheit Jr. scored against the Montclair Athletic Club in 1942. The game was scheduled to start at 6 pm, which was also exactly the time that the first lightning appeared. With each successive strike the opening face-off was delayed for 30 minutes, and it wasn't until 7:30 that the game could actually begin. The delay was 90 minutes, which is also how many seconds it took Sowers to score his first goal. He had three goals and an assist by the end of the first quarter and never stopped scoring, helping Princeton pull away from a Siena team that trailed only 8-5 at halftime and 12-7 after three. The 11-point night left Sowers all over the record book. His points tied two Princeton greats from the 1970s - David Tickner and Dave Heubeck - for the second-most in a game, and they left Sowers with 230 for his career, just two away from Ryan Boyle for second all-time at Princeton and 17 away from Kevin Lowe's all-time school record. He now has 65 points this season - with three regular-season games to go - and he now ranks first (83 last year), second (82 as a freshman) and 12th (65 so far this year) on Princeton's single-season points lists. Princeton sophomore longstick midfielder Andrew Song had a dominant performance of his own, with a goal in his second-straight game and team highs with six ground balls and two caused turnovers. Princeton had nine other players besides Sowers and Song who scored goals, including Chris Brown, Beau Pederson and Alexander Vardaro with two apiece. Jack-Henry Vara won 15 of 22 face-offs and had a goal of his own. Princeton improved to 5-6 on the season and 3-0 on Tuesdays. Sowers, for his part, has 11 goals and 15 assists in the three Tuesday games, wins over Navy, Denver and Siena. The Tigers are back in the Ivy League Saturday at Dartmouth (2).
