- The Springfield College men's lacrosse team fell in overtime to Sewanee, 12-11, at Colorado College on Thursday afternoon. In the first-ever meeting between the two schools, Sewanee made the trip from Tennessee to compete in the out-of-region battle and improved to 6-3 win the win. The Pride, which is competing in the state of Colorado for the first time since 1993, fell to 2-4 with the loss. Lucas Habich (Little Silver, N.J.) netted a career-high four goals and Joe Hawley (Pouslbo, Wash.) added three assists and a goal for the Pride. Both Jack Vail (Franklin, Mass.) and Zachary Schuette (Ballston, Spa, N.Y.) each had three-point afternoons, with Vail registering a goal and two helpers and Schuette finding the back of the cage twice go go along with an assist. Cole Finerty (Kensington, N.H.) was credited with 13 saves between the pipes and Matt D'Andrea (Cheshire, Conn.) won 10-of-18 faceoffs. For the game, Springfield owned a 52-40 edge in shots but committed 21 turnovers and was whistled for 11 penalties on the day. The Pride scored the only two goals of the opening quarter as Hawley found the back of the net at the 3:33 mark before Cameron Glover (Brunswick, Maine) beat the horn for a strike with one second remaining. Springfield extended its lead to 3-0 at the 13:44 mark of the second when Vail connected with Habich, only to have Hayden Hunt score twice in a 2:06 span to make it a one-goal game. Springfield responded with two-straight goals of their own, as Cole Pecora (North Haven, Conn.) got free for a man-up strike on the left wing and Habich delivered a highlight-reel goal as he dove from behind the net and shoveled in a strike into the top shelf with 2:42 to play. However, the Tigers answered right back and pumped in two goals in an eight-second span, and Schuette and Hunt would trade goals in the final 1:27 to make it a 6-5 game at the half. Sewanee outscored Springfield 3-1 in the third quarter, including two man-up goals 15 seconds apart with 1:31 to play, as the Tigers gained an 8-7 lead heading into the fourth. Habich netted his hat trick 57 seconds into the fourth on a great feed from Hawley, before another man-up goal from Henry Burns and unassisted strike from Will Pratt at 8:07 gave Sewanee a two-goal cushion. Springfield would not go quietly, as Patrick Watson (Franklin, Mass.) got free for a goal at 3:42 and Vail took an awesome inside feed from Pecora and ripped a low shot with 2:19 to play to even things at 10-all. The Tigers would take an 11-10 lead after Pratt potted another goal with 26 ticks left, but the Pride won the ensuing faceoff and Habich took advantage of an unsettled situation by ripping home a shot from 10 yards out to force overtime. Springfield turned the ball over twice in overtime, with Pratt forcing a costly turnover with 1:29 left. The Tigers then cleared the ball and Cameron Acuff found Pratt for the game-winner with 59 seconds left in overtime. Springfield will conclude its trip on Saturday when it takes on Colorado College at 1 pm MST.
