The St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse team extended its winning streak on Saturday afternoon as the Cardinals took down Oswego State 16-7 for their sixth consecutive win to start the 2019 season. With the victory Fisher moves to 6-0 overall, while the Lakers fall to 2-1 overall. Nicholas Miller was unstoppable for Fisher as the reigning Empire 8 Player of the Week tallied a career-high seven goals in the game off of eight total shots on goal. As a team, the Cardinals out-shot the Lakers 30-18, while also grabbing 43 ground balls compared to the 25 for Oswego. Fisher was able to find the back of the net early on in the first period as Miller and Jack Mulvihil gave the Cardinals a 2-0 lead with less than two minutes off of the clock. Oswego answered with a goal of its own at the 9:12 mark, cutting the lead to one midway through the first. From there, the Cardinals closed out the first period with four-straight goals as Miller and Chance Gates each found the back of the net twice, before the first period horn sounded. Oswego was the first team on the scoreboard in the second half as the Lakers were able to cut the Fisher led back to three goals, before the 10-minute mark of the second period of play. However, once again the Cardinal offense found some momentum and was able to tack on three consecutive goals in a six-minute span. The goal scorers included Ian Evans, Zach Wagner, and Jack Hyde. Before the halftime horn sounded, both sides would find the back of the net one more as Fisher would carry a 10-4 advantage into the locker room. The scoring continued for the Cardinals as the second half got underway as Miller and Tucker O'Donnell found ways to beat the Oswego goal keeper to increase the lead eight goals. Aside from one goal allowed in the third period, the Fisher defense continued its strong play and caused five turnovers in the period. With a 13-4 lead heading into the final quarter, Gates tallied his hat-trick goal on the man-up advantage and pushed the lead to 14-5. As the final quarter wore on, both sides would score two goals apiece as Miller and Jacob Risavi finished off the big scoring day for Fisher in route to its sixth straight victory. Darin Eakins was credited with his fifth win of the season in goal as the junior made three saves in the first half, while Brandon Moore was between the pipes in the second half, making eight saves. The Fisher defense had another stellar game as Kyle O'Dea and Matt Jeffries led the way with two caused turnovers apiece. Joe Post would finish 13-19 in the face off circle with 10 ground balls, while Mulvihill would win four of five draws to go along with six ground balls. Fisher returns to action on Wednesday at 7 p.m. when they travel to RIT to take on the No 2 Tigers in another non-conference matchup.
