The Southern Virginia University men's lacrosse team extended its winning streak to four games with a 23-14 victory over Pfeiffer on Wednesday afternoon. Offensively for the Knights (5-1), Zach Danneman recorded a game-high seven points in the form of five goals and two assists. Tennison Schmidt followed closely with four goals and two assists for six points while Ty Veres tallied four goals on the day. On the defensive side of the ball, goalkeepers Dalon Hampshire and Caleb Brodie each recorded five saves apiece while facing a combined 20 shots. Seth Millington anchored the defense with two caused turnovers, and Landon Malais went 14-for-19 on faceoffs while collecting a game-high nine ground balls while Nick Bair collected seven. The Falcons (1-3) scored first off a Jared Nelson unassisted goal before Danneman used two consecutive goals to put Southern Virginia up 2-1 with 10:20 remaining on the clock. Defensive midfielder Shawn Lamb scored his first goal of the game with two minutes remaining in the quarter, and Schmidt extended the lead to three goals 4-1 off an unassisted goal before heading into the second quarter of play. The Knights opened the second quarter with a 5-0 run to make the new score 9-1 with 8:49 remaining in the first half of play. Luke Cox of Pfeiffer scored the team's second goal of the game before Veres, and Carter Bean added two more points to the scoreboard for the Knights to make the score 11-2 with 6:02 on the clock. Following two consecutive Falcon goals, Southern Virginia closed out the first half of play with another 5-0 run led by two Danneman goals to go into the halftime break with the 16-4 lead. Danneman led all players with four first-half goals. At the break, the Knights controlled the faceoff x going 14-for-21 while securing 21 out of 34 ground ball opportunities. Southern Virginia limited themselves to only six turnovers in the first half and outshot the Falcons 40-13 while converting on both man-up power plays. Pfeiffer started the third quarter scoring the first two goals from Jared Nelson. Veres matched Nelson's two goals with two consecutive unassisted goals of his own, which sparked a 6-0 run. The Knights defense showed their dominance holding the Falcon's offense scoreless for over 13 minutes of play to head into the final quarter of play. The Pfeiffer offense came alive in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Knights 8-1 led by Quinn Becraft's two goals. With 2:50 remaining in the game, Schmidt scored his fourth of the game off a Danneman assist to lock in the Knights' 23rd and final goal of the game. The Falcons ended the quarter scoring two last-minute goals, but Southern Virginia walked away with the 23-14 victory. The Knights ended the game going 26-for-39 at the faceoff x while collecting 44 ground balls. Southern Virginia outshot Pfeiffer 61-24 and converted on 3-for-3 on the extra-man unit. Southern Virginia looks to keep its winning streak alive hosting Rhodes in Knight Stadium on Saturday, Mar. 4. The opening faceoff is set for 1 p.m.
