Fueled by five-straight goals to end the game, Manhattan stunned defending MAAC Champion Canisius 7-6 on Good Friday at Gaelic Park. The Jaspers snap a 12-game losing streak to the Golden Griffins in moving to 6-7 and 2-4 in the MAAC while the visitors are now 8-6 and 4-2 in the league. Trailing 6-2 and Canisius with the ball, junior Kelson Borisenko (Winnipeg, Manitoba / Hill Academy) leveled Carter Stefaniak while forcing a turnover with just 14 seconds until halftime. Classmate Luke Hanson (Middletown, NY / Minisink Valley) found Borisenko on the restart and the Canadian native quickly put the ball in the back of the net to make it a three-goal game at the break. Borisenko's play set the tone for a dominant third period that saw Manhattan score four-straight goals in staking the Jaspers to what would prove to be the final 7-6 margin of victory. Fourth Quarter Notes * Four of Canisius' nine possessions ended in turnovers with the other four resulting in 11 missed shots, including three that were turned away by Krebs. * Sophomore Justin Malpica (Glen Head, NY / Long Island Lutheran), Borisenko and junior Rob Johnson (Bayport, NY / Mount St. Mary's) all forced turnovers in the decisive stanza. * The visitors had four chances in the final minute, but was unable to place a shot on goal, before senior Dylan DeMuro scooped up a ground ball and fired it to midfield to clinch the victory. * Brad Nordstrom was outstanding in goal for the Golden Griffins in making five huge saves. Third Quarter Notes * Four of Manhattan's eight possessions ended with goals. * Malpica trimmed the deficit to 6-4 with a man-up goal off a feed from Giarratana at the 14:10 mark. * Sophomore Jake Nicolosi (West Islip, NY / West Islip) scored the next two Jasper goals, with freshman Tadhg O'Riordan (Tappan, NY / Tappan Zee) assisting on his first. * Giarratana scored the game-winning goal after making a move on the left side of the goal to create space at the 1:23 mark. * Four of the Golden Griffins' seven possessions ended in turnovers, including one shot clock violation. * DeMuro, Johnson and freshman Christian Clifford (Slingerlands, NY / Guilderland) all forced turnovers. * Krebs turned away four shots. First Half Notes * Down 2-0, junior Brandon Grinnell (Wakefield, MA / Wakefield Memorial) scored off a pass from O'Riordan with 8:17 to play in the first period. * Hanson then tied it up at 2-2 off a Trevor Pelletier (Jr., Miami, FL / Gulliver Prep) assist with 3:30 to play in the opening stanza. * The Golden Griffins responded with four-straight goals. * Borisenko's aforementioned goal quelled the spurt. * Mathieu Boissonneault and Stefaniak each had two goals to lead the way for the visitors. Notes * Manhattan's six wins are the most since posting seven in 2010. * The victory snaps a 12-game losing streak to Canisius as the Jaspers won for the first time since posting a 13-6 on April 28, 2007. * Giarratana is the second player in program history to record 100 goals and trails just all-time leading scorer Justin Otto '05 (129). * The Jaspers had a season-low 13 turnovers and a season-high 10 forced turnovers. * Canisius posted a 37-19 advantage in ground balls while winning 12-of-16 faceoffs. * Manhattan did not commit a penalty for the third time this year. * The Golden Griffins' six goals are a season low. * O'Riordan's two assists are a career-high while Nicolosi recorded his third multi-goal game of the year. * Nordstrom made 13 saves between the pipes. Up Next * The Jaspers will conclude the season against Quinnipiac on Saturday, April 27 at 3:00 pm.
