STATE COLLEGE, PA – No. 1 Maryland continued its winning ways in 2022 with a dominating 18-7 victory at Penn State to open Big Ten play for the Terps at a chilly Panzer Stadium on Sunday night. The Terps moved to 8-0 on the season and 1-0 in Big Ten action. Maryland reeled off 13 goals in a row bridging the second and third quarters to open an 18-3 lead while the defense kept the Nittany Lions off the scoreboard for more than 23 minutes from midway through the second quarter until the early fourth quarter. Keegan Khan scored four first-half goals, his second week in a row with four goals. He added an assist for a five-point game. Eric Malever (three goals, two assists) scored at least two goals for the fourth game in a row for a career-high five points. Kyle Long scored three goals, equaling his career-high for the third time. Jack Koras had his first first-career multi-goal game with a pair. Logan Wisnauskas posted five points on a goal and a season-best four assists and a goal. Ten different Terps scored goals in the victory. At the X, Luke Wierman once again dominated, winning 16-of-21, giving the Terps the huge advantage in possession, leading to 44 shots. He also had 10 groundballs, with all 10 coming in the first half alone. Between the pipes, starting goalie Logan McNaney made nine saves, allowing just three goals and holding Penn State scoreless for the final 22:25 of his playing time. Drew Morris made five saves in relief. Penn State fell to 2-7 and 0-1 in the Big Ten. Will Peden and Nils Barry each scored two goals for the Nittany Lions. Breaking Down The Action The Terps jumped out to a 4-0 lead to open the game with tallies by Will Koras, Keegan Khan and a pair by Kyle Long Long with four minutes left in the first quarter. McNaney made four saves in the first quarter as the Terps led 4-1 after 15 minutes. After Penn State crept back within two at 5-3 on a Will Peden goal with 7:35 left in the first half, the Terps ripped off six goals in a row with Khan scoring three goals in the spurt and Luke Wierman, Bubba Fairman and Long adding the others in the run. Khan and Wierman scored six seconds apart to open the burst. Maryland led 11-3 at halftime. The Terps continued the onslaught scoring seven goals in a quarter for the second period in a row. Maryland blanked Penn State, 7-0, in the third quarter with Malever scored a natural hat trick with the final three goals of the quarter in a span of 4:29. Wisnauskas, Koras, Jonathan Donville and Anthony DeMaio also scored. It was the fourth different quarter Maryland shut out its opponent this season. Penn State scored all four goals of the fourth quarter to make the score 18-7. The Wisnauskas Watch Fifth-year senior Logan Wisnauskas added to his totals as he currently ranks second all-time at Maryland in career points (282) and career goals (168), trailing only Jared Bernhardt (290 points and 202 goals). He moved to a tie for fourth in career assists with 114. He tied Roger Goss (1958-60) who had 114. Next on the list is No. 3 Charles Wicker (1953-56) with 121. Wisnauskas (168 goals) is ranked fifth on the active list of D1 players in goals, behind the active leader in Chris Gray of North Carolina (187). Wisnauskas currently ranks third in Division I in career points with 282. Multi-Goal, Multi-Assist Men Wisnauksas (one goal, four assists) had his 60th career game with multiple points, including all eight this season. He also his 32nd career game with multiple assists with seven this season. A week after netting four goals against Virginia, Keegan Khan (four goals) had his third multi-goal game this season Kyle Long (three goals) had his second multi-goal game this season and eighth of his career. Eric Malever (three goals and two assists) had his fifth multi-goal game this season, seventh of his career and second multi-assist game this year and fifth of his career. Jack Koras (two goals) had his first-career multi-goal game. Wierman Wins Luke Wierman won at least 60 percent of his face-offs for the seventh time in eight games as he won 16-of-21 on Sunday for 76.2 percent. On the season, Wierman is now 130-of-190 for 68.4 percent. He scored his fifth goal of the season in the second quarter. He also scooped up 10 groundballs – all in the first half – his fourth game this season with double-figure groundballs. Maryland is now 108-11 since Tillman took over the program in 2011 when it allows nine goals or less, for a .908 winning percentage. Maryland has won now 35 straight games under head coach John Tillman when allowing opponents under 10 goals. Matt Rahill had two caused turnovers and two groundballs for the Terps. John Geppert had three groundballs. Series History Maryland is now 39-1 all-time against Penn State since the two programs first met in 1974. Since the two teams both joined the Big Ten in 2015, Maryland is 7-1 against the Nittany Lions.
