Zach Cotoni scored the game-winning goal in overtime, as the New England College men's lacrosse team defeated Gordon College 13-12, for the first time since 2005, in non-conference action Saturday afternoon. Following the game, the Pilgrims improve to 1-0 on the year, while the Fighting Scots drop to 0-1. HOW IT HAPPENED Gordon College was the first team to strike, as Jacob Hryzan found the back of the net at the 1:17 mark of the first quarter. New England College answered as Patrick Storie and Connor Smith scored back-to-back tallies. Right before the end of the quarter, the Fighting Scots tied the game, as Xander Miller scored. New England College opened the second period with three straight goals by Storie, Smith and Charles Hacking. Gordon was able to rally with four goals in a row, as they took a 6-5 lead heading into halftime. In the third quarter, each side struck three times as Gordon entered the final quarter up 9-8. Smith tied the game up at 9-9 with his third of the game. Reed Foster put NEC up 10-9 with 9:02 left in the fourth. Gordon regained the lead with 3:18 left in regulation. Storie tied the game at 11-11 with his fifth goal of the game. Jason Dantona was able to give the Fighting Scots a 12-11 lead with just six seconds remaining Ieft regulation, but a faceoff win by Quint Bartush who found Jacob Blanchette who scored as time expired. In the overtime period, New England College controlled play, but it wasn't until Zach Cotoni had a diving goal with 57.5 seconds remaining the first OT. GOALTENDERS Tucker Anglemyer recorded 15 saves in the crease for the Pilgrims, while Jay Gallipo picked up 18 saves for Gordon. INSIDE THE NUMBERS -Connor Smith led the way with five points (four goals and one assist). -Reed Foster filled the stat sheet with one goal, one assist, six ground balls, and one caused turnover. -New England College outshot Gordon College 55-45. -Following the contest, New England College leads the all-time series 16-9. -This was the first time NEC has defeated Gordon College, since the Pilgrims won 7-6 on April 5th.
