. 15 Rutgers men's lacrosse held two four-goal leads, but were unable to close out No. 13 Syracuse in an 18-14 loss at the Carrier Dome. The Scarlet Knights were led by a career-high six goals from Adam Charalambides, career-high six assists from Kieran Mullins, and career-best 19 saves from goalkeeper Max Edelmann. Casey Rose and David Sprock each had two goals for Rutgers, with Mullins, Ryan Gallagher, Robert Marron and Brennan Kamish scoring once apiece. Syracuse outshot the Scarlet Knights 57-37. The Orange had 50 ground balls to Rutgers' 34 and won 27 faceoffs. HOW IT HAPPENED Rutgers got off to a great start, opening up a 4-0 lead out of the gate. Each of the starting attackmen tallied a goal in that span, plus Robert Marron had his first career tally in transition for a four-goal lead eight minutes into the game. Syracuse had the next three goals, but Adam Charalambides followed with two tallies of his own to give Rutgers a 6-4 lead after one quarter. In the second quarter, Rutgers ran its lead up to 9-5 as David Sprock scored with four minutes to go in the half. Edelmann backed the Scarlet Knights to that lead with nine first half saves, with Charalambides scoring five first half goals. The Orange had the last two goals of the second stanza, and Rutgers led 9-7 at intermission. Syracuse came back to tie the game at 9-9 in the third quarter. Rutgers answered right back with two goals, as Casey Rose and Brennan Kamish tallied to give Rutgers an 11-9 lead. The home team scored next, but Rose and Sprock followed with tallies for the visitors to take a 13-10 lead. Syracuse scored the next three goals, tying the game at 13-13 with nine minutes to play. Charalambides' sixth goal of the game gave Rutgers a 14-13 lead. However, the home team quickly tied it, then took their first lead of the day at 15-14. The Orange finished off the game with three more scores for an 18-14 final margin. NOTABLE - Adam Charalambides finished the game with six goals, tying his career-high. He finished with seven points. - Mullins leads the team with 16 assists and 32 points, playing in just six games. - Max Edelmann made a career-high 19 saves. He has made double-digit saves in all six of his games this year, and 21 times in his career. - Edelmann has made 94 saves through six games, an average of 15.67 per game. - Casey Rose had his first multi-goal game of the season. - David Sprock had a career-high two goals. - Robert Marron had his first career goal and a career-high four ground balls. - Ethan Rall had a career-high four ground balls. - Garrett Michaeli led Rutgers with five ground balls and two caused turnovers. - All of Rutgers' loses on the season have come to ranked foes. QUOTABLE "I thought our guys gave great effort and played hard for the whole game. We had a lot of success early on with some things we did offensively, I thought we took a step forward on that end. Defensively, I thought Max was seeing the ball well and we did a good job with the tempo. Syracuse is a talented team with talented players. With our inexperience, we didn't make it hard enough for them, and they were able to take advantage of and exploit some things. We missed out on some opportunities and some execution, and that's what it came down to. When you are playing a good team, you have to execute. We played three ranked teams in an eight-day span. We have the opportunity now with some more time to get healthy and prepare for our opponent, and grow and develop ourselves, with one more non-conference games and then the Big Ten Conference schedule. If we can continue that development, I like the trajectory that we are on." - Rutgers Head Coach Brian Brecht "Our offense was moving the ball well, using all six guys. We didn't get the end result that we wanted, but cohesively we are starting to gel as a unit. Credit goes out to my teammates for doing a good job to get me in positions to score. Lacrosse is a game of runs, Syracuse did well with their run near the end, we were hoping to be able to get a chance to counter that and go on a run of our own, but it didn't work out that way." - Attackman Adam Charalambides "A very good win for us today. I think Rutgers came into the Carrier Dome ready to play and got up early. We looked up, knew we'd have to roll our sleeves up to get back into the game. My hats off to their goaltender, I thought he was superb, but I think we started to figure out who they were in the second half. We had to work hard for everything we got and made better decisions, especially in the fourth quarter and that was the difference." - Syracuse Head Coach John Desko The Scarlet Knights return home for their final non-conference game. Rutgers will host Hofstra next Saturday at 1 p.m. Tickets for the 2019 season are on sale through the Rutgers Ticket Office online or by calling 1-866-445-GORU (4678).
