Norwich University men's lacrosse received multiple-goal performances from six different players to give the Cadets their first win of the 2020 campaign with a 17-12 victory over Curry College on Saturday afternoon at Sabine Field. Curry (0-1) opened up its first game of the season with a man-up goal from Matthew Scahill at the 12:31 mark of the opening quarter. Norwich (1-1) responded with a transition goal as junior goalie Nick Kandra (Crofton, Md.) hit senior attackman Jack Anzalone (Ridgewood, N.J.) in stride against the ride sending him in on a breakaway to even the game at 1-1. That goal was the first of six-unanswered markers punctuated by a pair of goals from senior midfielder Russell Gilligan (Fountain Hills, Ariz.) as the Cadets jumped out to a 6-2 lead at the end of the period. Scahill bookended the hosts' run with his second goal of the game with less than a minute remaining. Another goal from Anzalone and sophomore attackman Parker Campbell's (Rockaway, N.J.) first of the game extended the Cadets' lead to 8-2 at the 10:16 mark of the second frame. Curry responded with a pair of goals to cut the lead to 8-4 as Scahill notched his third of the game and Samuel Nielsen scored with the man advantage on a setup from Harrison Fallon. Norwich garnered its largest lead of the game at 11-4 following a trio of goals from junior attackman Payden Masaracchia (Enola, Pa.), junior middie Kevin Horchak (Mullica Hill, N.J.), and senior midfielder John Jennings (Riva, Md.). The Colonels trimmed the lead to 11-6 with the final two goals of the half as both Andrew DeLeary and Fallon scored unassisted markers, Fallon's coming on a man-up opportunity. The teams traded goals back and forth throughout the second half with the adversaries drawing to a 6-6 tie in terms of goals scored in the third and fourth quarters. Norwich outscored the Colonels in the third quarter 4-3 with senior middie Connor Bourque (Goffstown, N.H.) netting a pair of goals and Campbell and Masaracchia helping out with a goal apiece. Scahill opened the third quarter with his fourth of the game for the Colonels while Fallon posted two more including a buzzer-beating shot that ended the period. After Campbell scored his third of the game to make it 17-10 in favor of the hosts at the 7:29 mark of the fourth quarter, the defense did its job limiting the Colonels to just two more goals to secure the win. Norwich enjoyed a great deal of success at the face-off X as specialists Chris Ward (Westfield, Mass.) and TJ Wess (Catonsville, Md.) combined to win 23-of-32 faceoffs. Campbell paced the Cadet attack with three goals and four assists. Masaracchia registered four goals while Anzalone recorded a hat trick in the victory. Bourque, Gilligan and Horchak each popped in a pair of goals supporting the offense. Senior middie Thomas DeMag (South Burlington, Vt.) led the team in ground balls with six while Jennings caused two of the team's six turnovers on the afternoon. Norwich will remain at home in its next game on Tuesday as the Cadets host Plymouth St. in a game set for 4 p.m.
