Matt Gaudet converted a pass from Brian Tevlin with 53.4 seconds left in overtime as the No. 4 Yale Men's Lacrosse Team came from behind to beat UMass 12-11. Gaudet, who was standing on the left edge of the crease as Tevlin surveyed the options, did not want his teammate to get him the ball at that moment. "I saw my friend looking at me from the top and I was like, 'Oh no don't throw this. I don't know if this is the shot.' And he threw it, I caught it, the goalie came a little too slow and I was able to finish it." The Bulldogs (2-1) almost didn't have an opportunity to win their second straight game. The Minutemen, who had an 8-3 lead with just over 6 minutes left in the third quarter, held the Yale offense back for most of the contest with goalie Sean Sconone notching 14 saves. As the Minutemen stretched their lead and stopped Yale's shots, head coach Andy Shay encouraged the Elis. "Just worry about the next play. That's all you can do. If you play the scoreboard, it's never gonna work out for you," he told them. In the third quarter, the Bulldogs found their bite and began to close the distance. The Elis outscored UMass 8-1 to erase the big deficit and go ahead 11-9 late in the fourth, but the visitors scored twice, including the last one with .40 seconds left. The Minutemen took the faceoff in overtime and moved to end the game but Yale goalie Jack Starr made a save and defenseman Will Weitzel blocked a shot to help the home team set up the winner. TD Ierlan, who won 13 of his last 15 face-offs and 18 overall against a very tough UMass opponent, was crucial once again in gaining victory. Gaudet finished with 3 goals and 4 points, while Brendan Rooney also hit the net three times. Jackson Morrill led the Blue with 5 points, including 4 assists. This trio helped Yale outshoot UMass 50-28. Next weekend the Bulldogs head to Atlanta to face off against the University of Michigan Wolverines (3-1) in the College Lacrosse Classic. BULLDOG BITES There were 5 EMO goals combined today… The Bulldogs have played 3 straight one-goal games to start the season… Yale had more (4) players on the 2019 Tewaaraton Watch List than any school in the country, including Jack Tigh, TD Ierlan, Jackson Morrill and Chris Fake… Andrew Baxter, in his 7th season as Yale's Defensive Coordinator, has been promoted to associate head coach.
