CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – No. 4/4 Syracuse defeated No. 7/7 Virginia, 12-10, in the first round of the ACC Tournament on Wednesday, April 24. The Orange advance to Friday's semifinals where they will take on No. 1-ranked and unbeaten Boston College at 5 p.m. "We were dialed in at the beginning of the game and things were clicking," said Syracuse head coach Gary Gait. "The team was going full speed and making great decisions on both ends of the field. Everything was flowing and everything was going our way." HOW IT HAPPENED The squads traded goals to start the game before sophomore Sam Swart found the back of the net at the 23:24 mark, sparking the Orange (15-3) on a 7-0 scoring run that gave Syracuse the lead for good. After freshman Sierra Cockerille scored, junior Emily Hawryschuk and redshirt junior Mary Rahal scored two goals apiece to give Syracuse its largest lead of the game at 8-1 at the 6:45 mark. Each team recorded goals in the final 5:06, as the Orange took a 9-2 lead into the locker room at intermission. Virginia (12-6) scored three unanswered goals to start the second half, cutting the lead to 9-5. Back-to-back goals by freshman Meaghan Tyrrell and Swart pushed the advantage back to six, but the Cavaliers responded with two of their own for an 11-7 Orange lead with 15:22 on the clock. Syracuse took advantage of a Virginia yellow card as freshman Megan Carney scored on an assist from Carney to again put the Orange up five before Virginia tallied the final three goals of the game, the last coming with one second on the clock, for the 12-10 final. OF NOTE Hawryschuk led the way for the Orange with five points. She recorded four goals, giving her 61 this season. That total ranks 10th on Syracuse's single-season record. In addition, senior Nicole Levy scored a goal, increasing her career total to 140, moving her into a tie for 10th place on the Orange's all-time leader list. Rahal posted three points (2g, 1a) in the victory, giving her eight points in two games against Virginia this season. Junior goalkeeper Asa Goldstock recorded nine saves, including six in the second half. After the Cavaliers won 16-of-29 draw controls in the regular-season meeting between the two teams, the Orange dominated in the circle, winning 15-of-23. Freshman Sarah Cooper led the way with five draw controls, which tied her career high. UP NEXT Syracuse will make its fifth appearance in the ACC Tournament semifinals in the past six years. The Orange will take on No. 1 Boston College in the first semifinal on Friday at 5 p.m. The teams met earlier this season in the Carrier Dome.
