The No. 13 University of Pennsylvania men's lacrosse team stunned the defending national champions at Franklin Field, beating No. 2 Yale, 13-12, in triple overtime to cap an instant classic. The win is the fifth in a row for a Penn team which had started the season with three consecutive losses. The Quakers (5-3, 3-0 Ivy League) now sit alone in first place in the Ivies. What appeared to be a comfortable lead for the Quakers in the fourth quarter evaporated as the Bulldogs rattled off four straight goals to turn an 11-8 Penn lead into a 12-11 Yale advantage with 2:05 to play. The Quakers held on defense following a Yale faceoff win, and Tyler Dunn would transition the ball downfield before eventually beating the buzzer to level the game at 12 apiece with 0:01 remaining in regulation. Notes To Know… Penn is now 3-0 in the Ivy League, marking the first time since 1984 that the Quakers have opened an Ivy League season with three consecutive wins. That 1984 team would go on to finish 6-0 in the Ivy League, part of a 12-2 season. The Quakers have won five games in a row, their longest since winning eight in a row in 2014 on their way to a NCAA Tournament berth. The win ends a seven-game losing streak to Yale dating back to 2015. The Bulldogs had ended Penn's season in the Ivy League semifinals in each of the last three seasons. The win is the third in a row for Penn when playing a ranked opponent. The Quakers knocked off then-No. 8 Cornell last weekend and started their five-game win streak with a win at then-No. 11 Villanova. Overall this season, Penn is 3-3 against Top-20 opponents, and 2-2 in one-goal games against ranked opponents – each of those coming against teams then inside the Top-8. Penn's last win in 3 OTs came against Yale – a 10-9 win at Franklin Field in 2011. Penn is 7-9 in overtime under Mike Murphy. Simon Mathias had two goals and an assist to extend his point-scoring streak to all 51 career games – the second-longest active streak in the nation. He also extended his goal scoring streak to 28 games, tied for the longest-active streak in the country. Mathias moved into No. 5 all-time at Penn with 99 career goals. Junior Kyle Gallagher more than held his own against Yale's TD Ierlan at the X. In a matchup of two of the top four faceoff men in the country, Ierlan had 15 wins to 14 for Gallagher. Handley finished with two goals and three assists. He now has 32 points this season, with 29 of them coming over the last six games. Adam Goldner scored twice, extending his point-scoring streak to 17 games. He has 2+ goals in 12 consecutive games. Reed Junkin set a career-high with 22 saves, including four during the first two overtime periods. Kyle Thornton had two caused turnovers and tied his career high with four ground balls. How It Happened… The Quakers did not lead until midway through the third quarter, but they never let Yale get too comfortable as the defending national champs never led by more than two goals. There were eight ties in the game, and it was Penn who would hold the largest lead of the game with a pair of three-goal leads in the second half. Matt Gaudet scored twice in the first quarter, helping Yale open a 3-1 lead 7:05 into the game. After Gaudet's second goal, Mathias would connect on an unassisted goal before Dylan Gergar scored the first of his three in the game on the man-up off an assist from Handley. Those two Penn goals came just 0:30 apart and let Yale know there would be no reprisal of last season's Ivy League Tournament semifinals where the Bulldogs steamrolled to a 21-6 win. In fact, the Quakers would go on to score more in this game than they did in two meetings with Yale last year. The two sides would trade goals for the remainder of the second quarter, Yale netting the final tally of the opening half off the stick of Matt Brandau with 0:50 left in the half. Out of halftime, Penn would net the next two goals. Mathias scored first, then Alex Roesner would drive down the right wing and give Penn its first lead of the game with a short-side snipe. Those two goals were part of a 5-1 Penn run in the third quarter. Adam Goldner would score two of the next three for Penn, sandwiched around a goal from Gergar. Twice, Goldner found himself with space 10 yards from cage and he finished both times. Yale would match with a 5-1 run of its own in the fourth quarter, tying the game on a Jackson Morrill goal with 2:55 to play before taking a 12-11 lead via Gaudet's third of the game with 2:05 remaining. TD Ierlan won the ensuing faceoff, giving Yale a chance to either add to its lead or at least run valuable clock. Penn's defense stood tall and forced Yale into a shot clock violation with just over a half minute remaining. Tyler Dunn would do all of the work on the clear, giving Penn a chance to extend the game With time winding down, Sean Lulley fed Dunn on the right side and the senior co-captain challenged, then spun and fired a rocket inside the far post just before the clock expired. The Quakers held on through two overtime periods, relying on two saved in each of the first extra frames from Junkin as the Red and Blue managed just one shot over the eight minutes. Finally, in the third overtime period Gallagher won a faceoff to give Penn clean possession. Mitch Bartolo would dish to Mathias coming from behind the goal. Penn's other senior co-captain would feed his freshman teammate, and the rookie calmly switched hands before beating Yale's keeper stick side for the winner.
