Today the 2019 Williams College Ephs made history as the first men's lacrosse team at Williams to break thirteen wins in a season its ninety-one years of playing Varsity lacrosse. Now the 2019 Ephs hold the record for most wins in program history in one season after their 12-9 victory over Colby today. The Williams College Ephs (14-2/8-2 NESCAC) defeated the Colby College Mules (8-7/4-7 NESCAC) 12- 9 in today's match-up at Farley-Lamb Field on the campus of Williams College. The Ephs took control of the game at 10:30 of the first quarter when junior Brendan Hoffman sniped top right after an assist from Cory Lund. Four minutes later, Brendan Hoffman netted a second-straight goal in similar fashion from a feed by John Hincks. Colby cut the Williams lead in half at 5:40 when they scored their first goal of the game by Jack Rickards after dodging from the restraining line. With fifty seconds left in the quarter, Kevin Stump passed the ball to Cory Lund and Lund slam-dunked the ball in the net to give the Ephs a widened lead. William was up 3 – 1 over Colby at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, Williams tacked a goal onto their lead at 14:07 after Jared Strauss finessed one into the top left corner of the net. Colby soon countered a minute later as Riley Bergstrom scored off an assist from Colton Michel to make it a 4 – 2 game. At 8:35, Kevin Stump gave the Ephs back their three-score lead after burying one into the net on a feed from Cory Lund. Thirty seconds later when Williams was man-down, Cory Lund scored a goal off an assist from John Hincks after a great clear from Rock Stewart. After a Colby timeout, Lane Kadish netted one for the Mules to decrease the deficit to three scores. At 2:38, Kevin Stump scored his second goal of the game, but it was soon matched nine seconds later on a goal from Will Dodge. Williams was up at halftime 7 – 4. The Ephs took the field in the second half with the same pace of play and great offensive poise they had displayed in the first 30 minutes. At 13:29, Kevin Stump scored his third goal of the day after a feed from Cory Lund to bring the game to 8 – 4. Two minutes later, Kevin Stump netted a second-straight goal once again after an assist from Cory Lund to increase the Eph lead. At 9:15, Jared Strauss slam-dunked the ball and drew a penalty to give the Ephs an advantageous man-up opportunity. Unable to capitalize, Colby took back the ball and scored at 2:19 after Jack Richards put one in for the Mules. Colby was down by five goals, 10 - 5 going into the final quarter of play. Colby netted the first goal in the fourth quarter at 10:05 on a one-touch pass from Lane Kadish to Colton Michel and bring the game to 10 – 6. The Mules netted their third-straight goal at 8:24 when CJ Hassan rifled the ball into the net. At 5:14, Williams broke the Mules' scoring-streak after Brendan Hoffman ripped one unassisted with a successful doddge from the restraining line. Two minutes later, Jack Rickards netted a score for Colby off a feed from CJ Hassan to reduce the Eph lead to 11 – 8. At 1:26, Colby scored their second-straight goal of the fourth quarter on a goal from Lane Kadish. This was soon countered by a dunk from Williams Jake Haase twenty-five seconds later to bring back the Ephs' three-score cushion and secure the 12 - 9 victory. The Ephs used one goalie this game and sophomore Harry Gahagan had fourteen saves. The Mules used one goalie today as well. C.J. Layton had 17 saves. The Mules were led by Jack Rickards with three scores along with Lane Kadish with two goals and one assist. The Ephs were led by Kevin Stump with four goals and one assist. He was followed by Brendan Hoffman with three goals and two assists as well as Jake Haase and Jared Strauss who both had two scores. Cory Lund also had one goal and four assists. Eph head coach George McCormack stated, "Colby was a very tough team and I am happy with our effort and execution to secure a first-round win. We're looking forward to an awesome play-off run." With the win the Ephs advance to the semifinals of the NESCAC Tournament and will play fifth-seeded Amherst who topped fourth-seeded Bates 23-9 next Saturday at 3:00 PM on the campus of host Tufts University in Medford, Mass. Tufts defeated Trinity 17-8, while seventh-seeded Middlebury upset number two-seeded Wesleyan 11-7. Tufts and Middlebury will meet prior to the Ephs and Amherst play at 12:00 PM.
