CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Top-seeded Boston College dropped its first game of the season, 15-13, to #3 North Carolina in the title game of the 2019 ACC Championship, held at Alumni Stadium. North Carolina won its fourth consecutive ACC title and spoiled BC's quest for a first conference tournament championship. The Eagles jumped out to a 5-0 lead less than seven minutes into the first half, but the Tar Heels chipped away, outscoring BC 15-8 the rest of the way. After a Sheila Rietano goal on a free position made it 6-1 with 21:18 to play in the first half, UNC tallied five consecutive goals over the next 10-plus minutes to tie the match at 6-6 with 9:52 left in the half. Boston College would answer with three unanswered goals, as Jordan Lappin scored off a rebounded shot from Kenzie Kent with 7:32 to go. Kent would then score on back-to-back BC possessions, putting the Eagles up 9-6 with 1:19 left in the period. UNC's Scottie Rose Growney tapped one in with 27 ticks remaining to make it 9-7 at the break. Six minutes into the second half, Carolina scored three times to take a 10-9 lead with 23:54 to go. Dempsey Arsenault tied it for BC at the 20:29 mark, taking a pass from Kent and driving right. The Tar Heels responded 36 seconds later, going back up 11-10. But Sam Apuzzo scored on a free position with 18:41 to knot it at 11-11. Carolina would again tally three unanswered goals, leading 14-11 with 8:14 to go. BC mounted a strong comeback, as Arsenault and Lappin would each score to cut the deficit to one - 14-13 - with 5:56 to play. UNC's Katie Hoeg made it a 15-13 game with 2:03 to play, as she scored her third goal of the afternoon on a drive from behind the net. The Eagles drop to 4-17 all-time versus the Tar Heels. BC earned a 14-8 victory in Chapel Hill during the regular season on March 23. BC outscored their opponents 341-198 through the first 20 games of the season. Lauren Daly falls to 6-1 on the season. She subbed into the lineup with just under 18 minutes to play in regulation. The top eight teams will be seeded, and the top six seeds receive first round byes, while the 7- and 8-seed will host first-round games. The tournament begins with opening-round games on May 7 and 8 before the first round commences May 10. The championship will continue at campus sites for the second round (May 12) and quarterfinals (May 18-19) as teams look to earn a trip to Baltimore for the national semifinals.
