The Hobart College lacrosse team used an 8-1 run spanning the second and third quarters to defeat Vermont 17-11 at Dunning Field this afternoon. With the win, the Statesmen are now 4-1 overall this season. Hobart, which entered the game as the nation's No. 1 scoring offense (18.75 goals per game) scored 16+ goals for the fifth consecutive time. It's the first time that the Statesmen have scored 10+ goals in each of its first five games since 2007. That year Hobart hit double digits in its first eight games. It is the first time that the Statesmen have scored 16+ goals in each of its first five games since 1977. That year, Hobart scored 16+ in its first eight games, went undefeated (15-0) and won the national championship. Individually, Hobart was led by Chris Aslanian (2g, 3a), Ryan Archer (3g, 2a) and Eric Holden (3g, 2a) who each had five points. Justin Scott added four goals for the Statesmen. Thanks to his five point performance, Aslanian now has 162 in his career. That number jumps him over Alex Love '15, who was in second, into a tie with Daryl Veltman '08 for first place on Hobart's Division I career points list. Faceoff man Matthew Pedicine was 19-of-30 at the X and scooped up a game-high eight ground balls. Sam Lucchesi made 10 saves in goal for Hobart. David Closterman led the way for the Catamounts recording a hat trick. Ben French, and Thomas McConvey added goals. Michael Giaquinto scooped up seven ground balls and was 11-of-28 at the faceoff X. Nick Washuta made 17 saves in goal for Vermont. Hobart held a 58-38 edge in shots and a 41-27 edge in the ground ball battle. The Catamounts opened the scoring five minutes into the game on French's first goal of the game. Holden and Scott scored 26 seconds apart to give Hobart its first lead of the day. The Statesmen and the Catamounts traded goals to close out the first quarter with Hobart holding a 6-5 edge at the end of the first quarter. With 8:46 remaining in the half, Vermont scored to tie the game at seven. Hobart went on an 8-1 run over the next 18 minutes to take control of the game. The Statesmen defense held the Catamounts scoreless for a span of 15 minutes as they built a five-goal lead. Aslanian tied Veltman's record with an assist midway through the third quarter. He set up Holden's second goal of the game. Eighty-five seconds later, Holden completed the hat trick. Archer and Scott scored in the fourth quarter. David Closterman's third goal of the game capped his hat trick and was the final goal of the game. Hobart will be back in action next Saturday, March 16, when it welcomes Wagner to Geneva N.Y. The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. and is the Northeast Conference Opener for both teams.
