The University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse scored 13 consecutive goals and held Utah scoreless for 43 minutes, 56 seconds consecutively spanning the first-to-fourth quarters in a 16-2 victory over the Utes at Garber Field on Sunday. The win improved Massachusetts to 5-3 overall while Utah, a first-year Division I program, dropped to 4-6. Senior goalie Sean Sconone notched nine saves in net while the squad totaled 13 caused turnovers overall. Senior close defenseman Isaac Paparo had seven groundballs and four caused turnovers at the forefront of the effort while senior position mate Greg Pandise had two caused turnovers and as many groundballs in his first collegiate start. Seven additional Minutemen added a caused turnover for the squad in Matthew Hill, Dan O'Brien, Anthony Reale, Sconone, Spencer, Jackson Suboch and Quinn Towne. Sophomores Chris Connolly and Kevin Tobin paced the offense with career highs of eight points, respectively. Connolly finished with four goals and as many assists while Tobin had personal-bests of five tallies and three helpers. Junior attack Devin Spencer notched four points apiece via two goals and two assists while freshman midfielder Kevin Cutinella scored twice and handed out an assist. Junior midfielder Jeff Trainor was the lone additional multi-point producer with a goal and assist. Senior faceoff specialist Tom Meyers continued his dominance at the dot with a 14-for-17 effort which included eight groundballs. Sophomore Tyler Green was 3-of-5 with a groundball as the faceoff duo combined for 17 wins in 22 opportunities (77.3 percent). The Maroon and White defense allowed a first quarter goal to Utah's Jimmy Perkins with 7:42 to go in the first, which tied the game at 1-all after Spencer netted the opening tally. The Utes did not score again until Massachusetts held a 13-goal lead midway through the final frame. Between Utah goals, Massachusetts put in 13 tallies from six competitors, led by four each from Connolly and Tobin. Tobin put Massachusetts back in front with 3:53 left in the first before Connolly scored back-to-back-to-back for the second quarter hat trick. Connolly sparked his scoring streak with a wrap-around, back-handed, over-the-shoulder shovel shot at the right post. A man-up tally by Trainor and Tobin's second of the game followed as UMass built its lead to 7-1 at the halftime break. Trainor muscled his way to the left post for his 11th tally of the year while Tobin sliced through Utah's defense and found space five yards away from the crease in front for the score. Tobin resumed his second less than five minutes into the third quarter with his 10th of the season on a feed from Spencer before Connolly and Procyk scored in succession as the squad pushed the advantage to 10-1 heading to the fourth. Connolly picked up his 20th assist of the season only 53 seconds into the fourth quarter when he found Cutinella near the crease for Cutinella's fourth score of the year. Tobin dunked home a rebound, Cutinella scored at the right post and Spencer capped the 13-goal run with 11:27 to go in the fourth. Bo Powell broke the streak for Utah with 8:46 left following a pass from Cam Redmond, but Massachusetts tacked on two more for the 16-2 final score. Tobin had his fifth of the day on a feed by Nick Roy while Jack Siebert slotted a pass to Michael Biddle at the right post. Massachusetts led in shots, 48-27, shots on goal 37-12 and groundballs, 39-21. Utah committed 21 turnovers to 16 by the Minutemen. Utah starting goalie Liam Donnelly made 17 saves and allowed 13 goals before Donnelly exited in the 48th minute. Daniel Costa took over goalie duties from Donnelly and had four stops against three goals allowed. UMass rotated in Cameron Carpenter for Sconone in the 82nd minute and Carpenter made one save without allowing a Utah tally. Massachusetts returns to Garber Field for its third consecutive home game on Sat., March 23 for a 1 p.m. meeting with Brown.
