The No. 15 University of Denver women's lacrosse team fell to Georgetown on Saturday afternoon in the BIG EAST Tournament Championship. The Pioneers dropped to 14-3 on the year, while the Hoyas improved to 11-8. Sophomore Bea Behrins led the Crimson and Gold with three goals against Georgetown, totaling seven in the tournament. Katherine Fischer totaled a career high seven ground balls to force the Hoyas to their first overtime game of the season, but it wasn't enough to secure the BIG EAST Tournament title. Pioneer Performers: In addition to Bea Behrins' three goals, Quintin Hoch-Bullen and Eliza Radochonski each tallied two and Julia Feiss tabbed one. Carson Gregg totaled three ground balls and seven saves in 67 minutes in net. Fischer led the team with three caused turnovers, followed by Laura Milleker (1), Kennedy Milburn (1) and Gregg (1). By The Numbers: The first half of the contest was evenly matched, with Denver putting up seven ground balls, two saves and six draw controls, and Georgetown totaling eight ground balls, three saves and six draws. By the final whistle, the Pioneers totaled 26 shots, 14 ground balls, 13 draws and seven saves. Georgetown put up 25 total shots, 20 ground balls, seven draws and eight saves. Timeline: A scoreless first six minutes was broken by Bea Behrins who fought through two defenders to put the Pioneers up 1-0, Radochonski followed with back-to-back goals to put Denver at a comfortable 3-0 lead. Hoch-Bullen, Feiss and Bea Behrins all put away a goal for the Pioneers to lead 6-0 with 15 minutes in the first half. Georgetown knocked in its first and second consecutively around the 14 minute mark, but Hoch-Bullen scored again off a beautiful assist from Elizabeth Behrins. The Hoyas were able to put away two more before the clock ran out, but the Pioneers entered halftime leading 8-4. Both teams came out fired up after the half, resulting in a scoreless first eight minutes. The Hoyas were first to break the stalemate, scoring their fifth goal on a free position shot. Georgetown scored its second goal of the half with 14:58 remaining, narrowing the gap to just two goals, Denver leading 8-6. Five minutes and two goals later, Georgetown tied up the game, 8-8. The score remained even until the final whistle blew, sending the Pioneers to their second overtime game this season. Georgetown's Francesca Whitehurst, the Co-BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year, scored the game winner in double overtime, sending the Hoyas home with the tournament trophy. BIG EAST Tournament Team: Following the game the BIG EAST announced its All-BIG EAST Tournament Team, Hoch-Bullen, Radochonski, Bea Behrins and Maddie Baum were named for the Pioneers. The Journey: After going a perfect 5-0 in BIG EAST regular season play, the Pioneers received their first BIG EAST regular season title, securing them the No. 1 seed entering the conference tournament. On May 2 Denver played Villanova in the semifinal game, winning 15-5 and securing a spot in the championship match. No. 3 Georgetown took down No. 2 Marquette 17-10 to advance to the finals, setting the stage for Saturday's game.
