It was an instant classic NCAA Tournament First Round game at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium as the Towson University men's lacrosse team clashed with the University of Maryland for the first time in nearly a decade. A back-and-forth affair saw the Tigers (11-5) take a lead with less than two minutes to play, but the visiting Terrapins (12-4) scored with three seconds left to force overtime. A Towson turnover in the extra frame lifted Maryland to a 14-13 win and a berth in the NCAA Quarterfinals. Hosting its first first-round game since the 2005 season, Towson was led by a five-point day from senior attackman Brendan Sunday, who capped his sensational career with four goals and one assist for his 10th hat trick of the year. Linemate Brody McLean scored four times while senior middie Timmy Monahan had three helpers and one goal. Returning for the first time since April 20, 2019 after suffering an upper body injury, senior faceoff specialist Alex Woodall went 22 of 31 at the X with 14 ground balls as he sealed his career with 583 career faceoff wins for the Black & Gold. Kyle Long led the game for the Terps with five points on one goal and four assists. Maryland had four-point efforts from Logan Wisnauskas (3g, 1a), Louis Dubick (2g, 2a) who scored the game-tying goal, and Bubba Fairman (3g, 1a). Danny Dolan made 15 saves in the win. How it Happened After the initial feeling-out period, Towson took a 1-0 lead just over four minutes into the game as Sunday finished a feed from Monahan. The Terps capitalized on an extra-man chance from Anthony DeMaio to tie the game before Long scored 90 seconds later. Matt Rahill got his second of the season to give the Terps a 3-1 lead. Towson pushed the game to a 3-3 tie through 15 minutes as McLean and Greg Ey scored in succession, the latter coming with just 16 seconds left in the grame. The Tigers opened the second quarter with a four-goal outburst for a 7-3 lead as Grant Maloof scored twice while McLean and Sunday added to the run. Maryland posted two goals in the final three minutes of the half from Fairman and DeMaio to give Towson a 7-5 lead at the break. DeMaio cut the lead down to one with his second of the game with 11:20 to play in the third before Tiger close defenseman Gray Bodden scored after spinning and weaving through Maryland's entire defense for an 8-6 lead. The Terps scored back-to-back goals from Fairman and Dubick to tie the game for a third time at 8-8 before the Tigers scored another pair of goals for a 10-8 lead through 45 minutes. Once again, it was McLean and Sunday in succession with Monahan and Jake McLean (no relation) on the back ends, respectively. Maryland's offense clicked early in the fourth quarter, reeling off four-straight goals for a 12-10 lead. Wisnauskas scored twice, followed by Jared Bernhardt and Fairman. Down a pair, Monahan, Brody McLean and SUnday all scored for a 13-12 lead with 1:50 to play in regulation. With a difference in the shot clock and game clock, Towson was forced to bury the ball in the corner with 25 seconds left in regulation. Bernhardt took advantage of the turnover and scored with three seconds left in the fourth to tie the game. Towson won the faceoff in the extra frame, but a tipped pass led to a Maryland transition set as Dubick scored 1:39 into overtime for the win. Behind the Numbers Towson out-shot the Terrapins 47-34, including a combined 28-15 in the second and third frames. Woodall went 22 of 31 at the X in his return, collecting 14 ground balls along the way. Maryland tried three different faceoff specialists. Woodall finished his season with the program's second-best winning percentage (.742) and he is only the second player in program history to win more than 70 percent of his draws in a single season. The Tigers did not capitalize on the Terps' lone penalty while Maryland went two-for-three on the extra man. Towson went a perfect 15-for-15 in clearing while Maryland gained the zone 21 times on 23 qualifying chances. Maryland won its 11th-straight game against Towson while improving to 29-5 against the Tigers. It was the first-ever game between the programs that needed overtime to decide. It was Towson's first NCAA Tournament loss against the Terps. Up Next for Towson With the defeat, the Tigers' 2019 season came to an end Sunday afternoon.
