Three Lehigh goals in the last three minutes of the third quarter were the difference in the Mountain Hawks' 10-8 Patriot League decision over No. 16 Colgate here Saturday. Colgate had opened the second half with four straight goals to forge a 6-6 tie. Sam Cleveland and James Caddigan sandwiched goals around two from Brian Minicus and the Raiders appeared to have the momentum. But Lehigh responded with three goals in the final 2:51 of the quarter, including Ryan Klose's tally with 0.8 seconds left that made it 9-6. Cleveland completed his hat trick early in the fourth quarter to give the Raiders hope, only to have Lehigh's Alex Tumminello score unassisted with 8 minutes remaining for a 10-7 visitors' lead. Nicky Petkevich scored his second of the game a little over a minute later, but that was as close as the Raiders could get. 38674Lehigh and All-Patriot League First Team pick Conor Gaffney controlled the faceoff-X, winning 17 of 20 draws to keep the Raiders on their heels. Gaffney entered Saturday's game with a .645 winning percentage for the season after he won .594 percent last year. Cleveland's hat trick was his second of the season. Both he and Petkevich had multigoal games for the third time in four games this year. Connor Mullen was sharp in goal, posting a career-high 16 saves including eight during that comeback third quarter. Parker Baddley and Nick Salameda caused two turnovers apiece on the defensive end. Bottom Line • Lehigh 10, No. 16 Colgate 8 Won-Lost Records • Colgate is now 2-2 overall after dropping its Patriot League opener. • Lehigh is now 2-3 and 1-0. Raider Facts & Figures 38675• Cleveland added two assists to pass Brandon Corp (2006-09) on the career chart, 68 to 67. Cleveland takes over sixth place and trails Eric vonHoffman (1978-81) by three. • Matt Donovan had a career-high three assists. • The two goals for Minicus marked his first collegiate multigoal game. • Petkevich already has 11 goals after scoring nine all of last season. • Because the faceoff numbers were one-sided, Lehigh also finished with a 31-10 edge in ground balls. • Lehigh's Lucas Spence matched Cleveland with three goals and two assists. Seven different Mountain Hawks scored goals. From the Source • Colgate head coach Matt Karweck: (On the game) "My hat's off to Lehigh. Kevin does a good job with his guys and he's got a great situation going right now. He's got a great faceoff guy, he's got a very good goalie and their offensive players handle the ball really well. That combination of make-it/take-it is tough. We attacked our way back as we started to figure out their faceoff guy a little bit. "We didn't possess the ball well offensively based on the flow of the game. When you finally get the ball on offense, you can't take the first opportunity – you just can't do it. Even though you want to and it's really enticing, the odds of that going in the back of the net with their rested defense is low. "Here are the things we did great, and here's what I love about our team. The things we worked on this week, and we had extra time, we worked a lot on our riding and subbing game. We didn't give up any transition goals. None off the faceoff, none off the clear. We rode really well and we are going to get better at that. Our defense, we gave up 10 6-on-6 goals, but that's not a lot when you think we had a third fewer possessions than they did. I'm really proud of the way our defense was playing and rotating around, and we got better in the second half. "It's still Game 4 of a brand new regime here, and we're still learning and getting better. I love that." (On the third-quarter comeback) "On defense, we forced them to get down to the end of shot clocks a bunch of times. And they weren't holding the ball; they were trying to stuff it in on us, so that was great. "As we started to come back, our offensive guys moved the ball more. That sounds simple, but in a game like this you have to have a sense of the flow of the game. Earlier in the game, we took too many quick shots. "We lost by two and won three faceoffs. We lost by two and got smashed in ground balls. No transition goals. We scored against zone and man defense, which is good because we worked on that this week. Our extra-man was 1-for-3. We are a save or two each side of flipping the script." Gate Grab Bag • Attendance inside Crown Field at Andy Kerr Stadium was 210.
