Third-seeded North Carolina got career scoring days from Olivia Ferrucci and Scottie Rose Growney and beat unseeded Florida, 15-11, at UNC Lacrosse Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Ferrucci tied her career high with five goals and Growney set a career high with four scores to lead the Tar Heels to the victory. With the win, UNC (16-3) advances to host next Saturday's NCAA quarterfinal game against Virginia, which beat Navy on Sunday in Charlottesville, Va. Carolina led 6-1 after the first 20 minutes of the game and eventually led, 9-4, at halftime. The Gators clawed back to within three goals late at 13-11 with under eight minutes to play. The Tar Heels scored the last two goals of the game for a four-goal final margin of victory. In addition to Ferrucci and Growney, UNC got two goals and an assist from Jamie Ortega and a goal and three assists from Katie Hoeg. Kara Klages, Tayler Warehime and Taylor McDaniels had single goals, and Ally Mastroianni had an assist. Sydney Pirreca scored five goals for Florida. NOTABLES • Carolina is making its 21stappearance in the NCAA Tournament in 24 years as a varsity program, including 15 in a row. • The Tar Heels have won seven consecutive games. • Carolina is 33-18 all-time in the NCAA Tournament, including 24-3 at home. • UNC is 17-1 with 17 consecutive wins in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. • Jenny Levy's 33 NCAA Tournament wins rank fifth in NCAA history. • Katie Hoeg had three assists on Sunday to break the UNC career assist record. Hoeg now has 124 in her career. • Jamie Ortega had two goals and an assist, setting the Carolina single-season goal record with her 73rdgoal of the season. • Ortega also became the first Tar Heel player ever to reach the 100-point plateau. She has 100 points on 73 goals and 27 assists this year. QUOTABLE UNC Head Coach Jenny Levy after the game: "Florida is a great opponent with a lot of great athletes. They play hard, they work hard, they take a lot of pride in their program. It was a really great win for our team today. We knew it was going to be a battle all the way to the end, and we knew they would go on runs and put a lot of pressure on our defense, so I thought we handled it. Our offense gave us a little bit of a cushion in the first half, and I wasn't happy that we lost that a little bit in the second half. Taylor Moreno had some unbelievable saves, and overall it was a team win." UP NEXT The Tar Heels will be back in action next Saturday in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament against Virginia in Chapel Hill. The Cavaliers beat Navy on Sunday afternoon.
