On a day when the 2009 Syracuse lacrosse team was honored in the Dome for their relentless fourth-quarter effort that capture the program's 11th national title, it was a fourth-quarter barrage a decade later that earned the No. 15 Orange (3-2) a 14-10 win over No. 17 Johns Hopkins (2-3) in the latest chapter of the storied rivalry. Jacob Buttermore's hat trick led the way offensively, while Peter Dearth (2-1) chipped in two from the midfield. Bradley Voigt and Jamie Trimboli each scored two as well, while Drake Porter turned in 13 saves, including eight in the third quarter alone. The Orange defense buckled down and only allowed five goals over the game's final 45 minutes. "We got the lead in the fourth quarter and a week ago, we had it and we didn't finish it so it was nice to be in a similar situation and put it away," said head coach John Desko. "I thought we played a lot smarter. It was sloppy at times during the game. I think defensively in the first quarter, we hadn't settled into our package and we didn't realize who they were and as the game went on, we got better and started to follow the game plan. "I thought that the third quarter was sloppy for both teams and with some transition in the fourth quarter, we were able to pull ahead. Congrats to our players. It was a good win." Both teams used the first quarter to establish their attack, and it paid off for both squads. Johns Hopkins got on the board first off an Alex Concannon goal, but SU responded less than two minutes later with shot from Dearth. The goal tied the game up at 1-1 with 12:48 left in the first. The Blue Jays got off to a bit of a scoring run, scoring four-straight to give themselves a 5-1, but Brendan Curry netted his eighth of the season to get SU back in the scoring column. Brad Voigt would add one more with :05 left on the clock to end the first period with SU down 5-3. The scoring didn't slow down in the second, with SU cutting the deficit to one with a goal from Stephen Rehfuss. Johns Hopkins' Joey Epstein would respond two minutes later, giving the Blue Jays a two-goal pad with 9:42 left. Syracuse got the deficit back down to one with Dearth's second of the afternoon, and tied the game with Jamie Trimboli's fifth goal of the season with 8:35 left in the half. The teams then traded a pair of goals, but Johns Hopkins found a way to score with 1:15 left to give them the 8-7 advantage heading into the break. The third period saw improved defenses on both sides, and a goal from Buttermore and Johns Hopkins' Forry Smith kept the one-goal advantage for the Blue Jays heading into the fourth. From there, it was all Syracuse. A four-goal SU run with goals from Trimboli, Buttermore, Brett Kennedy and David Lipka gave Syracuse a 12-9 lead with 8:28 remaining. Johns Hopkins cut into that run with a Matt Hubler goal, but SU kept up the pressure and added two more from Buttermore and Griffin Cook before the final horn sounded, giving the Orange a 14-10 victory. Syracuse is back in action when Rutgers makes its way to the Dome on March 16. The opening faceoff is at 1 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
