Air Force outscored Canisius nine goals to two in the second half to fly by the Golden Griffs, 13-7, in the Falcons' first trip to Demske Sports Complex, Saturday afternoon. Freshman midfielder August Johnson recorded his first career hat trick in the first half and finished the game with four goals, helping the Falcons to a 3-2 record while Canisius dropped to 2-3. The Falcons and Griffs opened the game neck-and-neck as they concluded the first quarter knotted at two goals apiece. Canisius was first to light the scoreboard up with a goal at the 12:49 mark. Johnson responded with his first collegiate goal two-minutes later. Just 43-seconds after Johnson's goal Tim Baker, who also finished with a hat trick, found the ball a home in the back of the Griffs' net to take the 2-1 lead. Canisius knotted the game up with a goal in a man-up opportunity at the 3:09 mark. Johnson was the first to strike in the second quarter with a ripper just 26-seconds in. Nine minutes and two Canisius goals later, the Colorado Springs, Colorado, native notched his hat trick goal to knot the game at four. The Griffs plugged another goal in 40-seconds later to take the lead heading into halftime. The second half was all Air Force as the Falcons erupted for five goals in the third quarter and four in the fourth while holding the Griffs to just one goal in each quarter. Senior leadership was the first to light the scoreboard in the second half as co-team captain Jack Flynn sent a rocket past the keeper for the tying goal at five. Trey Lervick, who leads the team in goals this season, added the sixth goal at the 10:01 mark. All six of the Falcons' goals up to that point were unassisted attacks. Junior attack man Matthew Schwartz got into the action as Johnson assisted No. 31 for a goal in a man-up opportunity at the 7:42 mark. Baker, wanting to maximize his final season at the Academy, bullied his way into scoring territory to finish for his second goal. Co-team captain Cameron Carter was tuned into his surroundings when he found, and connected, with Johnson for his fourth goal at the 3:46 mark. With just 26-seconds remaining in the quarter, the Griffs plugged in their sixth goal. Air Force continued its tear into the fourth quarter as Baker notched his first career hat trick with an unassisted goal at the 13:38 mark to give Air Force a 10-6 lead. Moments later, Lervick registered his second assist off of a feed to Schwartz for his second goal, fifth of the season. Lervick remained in the mix as Carter found him open for his second goal of the game. Canisius made on final push, scoring their seventh goal at the 9:23 mark. They went quietly into the night thereafter. In the waning seconds of the game, Flynn plugged in his second goal, fifth of the season assisted by Johnson who had a highlight reel of an afternoon. At the final horn, the Falcons dominated the stat sheet. The Falcons outshot the Griffs, 40-25, led by Johnson's 11 shots, eight of which were taken on frame, setting a team season-high in shots, shots on goal and points in a single game. Johnson also added three ground balls and a caused turnover to his stat line. Flynn also recorded a personal season-high eight shots in the assault, for the second-most by any player in a single game this season. On the defensive side, sophomore defender Vince Lombardi returned to action on a mission after missing last game with an injury. Lombardi forced a game-high three caused turnovers while picking up three ground balls. Senior co-team captain and nightmarish defender Brandon Jones picked up a game-high seven ground balls while adding a caused turnover and two long-pole shots to his stat line. Two Falcons had success at the face-off X, led by senior face-off specialist Trent Harper who won 8-of-14 (.571) attempts before teammate Ryan Lynch took the reins to win six-of-nine attempts. The final total at centerfield was 14-of-23 wins in favor of Air Force. Next up, Air Force hosts Detroit Mercy in a midweek game at the Academy on Wednesday, March 6. The opening face-off is slated for 11 a.m. at Falcon Stadium. The meeting will mark the sixth game between the programs with Air Force remaining unbeaten in the series, 5-0.
