Eleven different players scored goals and No. 10 Duke outscored High Point 6-0 in the fourth quarter to come away with a 17-8 men's lacrosse victory over the Panthers Saturday afternoon at Vert Stadium. Senior CJ Carpenter tallied a game-high three goals, while Cameron Badour, Nakeie Montgomery and Dyson Williams all had four points. Montgomery dished out three assists, while Badour continued his stellar start to 2020 with two goals and a career-high two assists. Defensively, Duke (1-1) held High Point scoreless for the final 20:45. A quartet of Blue Devils had a pair of caused turnovers, including rookie Kenny Brower, who also picked up four ground balls. Tyler Carpenter was outstanding yet again, forcing a turnover, picking up seven ground balls and scoring a crucial first-quarter goal. High Point (0-2) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead before the Blue Devils scored four unanswered to take a 4-2 lead after the opening quarter. Badour sparked the four-goal spurt with a pair of markers to tie the game. Rookie long poles Will Frisoli and Carpenter got into the mix with their first career scores and giving the Blue Devils their first lead of the day. The Panthers refused to let Duke pull away, keeping the game within two goals before freshman Dyson Williams beat the halftime clock to put the Blue Devils up three, 8-5, at the break. Badour provided the assist and Williams snuck it past High Point goalie Parker Green with three ticks left on the clock. After High Point made it a two-point game to start the third, the Blue Devil offense started to click. Nakeie Montgomery started the three-goal run with an unassisted score at the 11:03 mark. CJ Carpenter threw one in 46 seconds later and Williams finished in front of the net on a great look from Montgomery for Duke's largest lead of the afternoon at 11-6. A couple of unsettled goals from High Point made things interesting in the final minutes of the third quarter, but Duke came out in the fourth quarter looking for a strong finish. Joey Manown dove his way to a goal on a perfect dish from Montgomery at 13:54 and then Owen Caputo found Carpenter on the crease just over minute later to push the lead back to five. The final stanza was all Duke as it held the Panthers scoreless and to only eight shots overall. Offensively, the Blue Devils couldn't miss as they scored six goals on 10 shots. JT Giles-Harris drew the assignment of guarding top scorer Asher Nolting and held him to just two goals and none after the 10-minute mark in the second quarter. Jordan Ginder and Joe Stein were solid at the faceoff X, winning 15-of-24 restarts. Ginder picked up six ground balls. In goal, Andrew Bonafede saw his first action between the pipes, making six saves and allowing only four goals in 37 minutes of action. The Blue Devils continue their three-game road swing at No. 9 Denver next Saturday. Faceoff is set for 2 p.m. (ET) at Peter Barton Stadium.
