(U-M Lacrosse Stadium) Score: Michigan 13, Marquette 12 Records: U-M (4-3), Marquette (3-4) Attendance: 193 Next U-M Event: Sunday, March 15 – at Notre Dame (South Bend, Ind), 4:00 p.m., ESPNU ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team defeated Marquette, 13-12, in a nailbiter Wednesday (March 11) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium. Junior Alex Buckanavage had a game-high seven points and became the fastest Wolverine to reach the 100-point plateau. In a game of runs, Michigan (4-3) saw Marquette (3-4) jump out to an early 2-0 lead, holding the Wolverines scoreless until the six-minute mark of the first quarter. Michigan answered back with six unanswered goals in less than six minutes to finish the period. Buckanavage scored three straight goals in the quarter alone, pushing Michigan to a 6-2 first-quarter lead. The Golden Eagles opened the second with three straight goals, pulling within one goal of the Wolverines at 6-5. Michigan responded with goals from senior Christian Ford and freshman Josh Zawada to take an 8-5 lead. Marquette scored a goal with 2:31 left in the the second quarter before Buckanavage closed out the half with a goal, which was the 100th point of his career, to push the Wolverines' lead to 9-6. The Wolverines were held scoreless for almost the entirety of the third quarter, but freshman Jacob Jackson steered the Maize and Blue out of its rut with his goal with 12 seconds remaining in the third, giving Michigan a 10-8 lead heading into the final period. Trading blows throughout the fourth, Marquette tied the game at 11 -- the first tie since the 4:51 mark in the first quarter -- with a goal from Chris Kirschner with 7:28 left in the game. Michigan scored with 6:16 left to take a 12-11, but the Golden Eagles scored the equalizer with 4:08 on the clock. Rocco Sutherland scored his second goal of the day with 3:21 left in the contest, and despite a furious attack by Marquette in the final minute, Michigan held on for the win. Starting in net for the first time was sophomore John Kiracofe, who tallied 13 saves, including two crucial stops in the final minute of the fourth quarter. Sophomore Nick Rowlett had a career day, winning 22 of 29 faceoffs at the dot and having a team-leading 13 ground balls. The 22 wins tie the U-M team record for wins in a contest. Buckanavage led the Wolverines with seven points (four goals, three assists), and Zawada contributed four points (2G, 2A). Junior Kevin Mack had a goal and an assist to stretch his point streak to 33 consecutive games. Close defender Andrew Darby compiled a career-high five ground balls.
