Seniors Cam Ziegler (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Tom Kennedy (Farmingdale, N.Y.) recorded five-point afternoons as the Bryant University men's lacrosse team built an early lead and withstood a Hartford rally in a 15-10 victory Saturday afternoon at Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium. Ziegler scored four goals and added an assist, while Kennedy tallied a goal and four assists. Freshman Marc O'Rourke (Hingham, Mass.) chipped in three goals and an assist for the Bulldogs, while junior Kevin Beimfohr (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) made seven saves in his first career start. GAME INFORMATION Bryant 15, Hartford 10 Records: Bryant (2-2), Hartford (0-2) Location: Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium (West Hartford, Conn.) COACH PRESSLER'S COMMENTS "I was really pleased with our start today. It's a difficult game – a two-hour bus for a day trip over to Hartford – there could be a lot of distractions. Our guys were so professional in their approach today. Great locker room prior to the game, great pregame warmup and you couldn't ask for a better start." "The face-off was key [to Hartford's third-quarter comeback. That was the reason. Kenny [Massa] had the better of Dylan Protesto in the first half. Protesto had the better of Kenny in the second half. We played defense the entire third quarter and before you know it, it was 9-8 … For us, it was huge that they never tied it, we extended the lead and had a huge fourth quarter." "Two guys that were key were two of our captains in Tom Kennedy and Cam Ziegler. They were huge for us down the stretch – one in the midfield and one on the attack. They made some terrific plays when we needed them. Anthony Johnson, Chas South and Jake Chandler had much better games overall in close defense. Kevin Beimfohr, in his first career start, was solid. He did a great job in the clearing game. He had a couple of remarkable one-on-one saves. Kevin really had a solid performance in his debut." KEY MOMENTS Bryant led 3-1 through 15 minutes but rattled off the first five goals of the second quarter to take a commanding 8-1 lead. The Bulldogs led 8-2 at the half. Hartford cut the Bryant lead to 9-8 early in the fourth quarter, but the Bulldogs responded with two goals from Ziegler and goals from freshman Marc O'Rourke (Hingham, Mass.) and graduate student Kenny Massa (Huntington, N.Y.) to push the lead back to five. HOW IT HAPPENED Bryant opened the scoring via junior Kevin Quigley (Fairfax Station, Va.) on a feed from junior Matt Heldberg (Kings Park, N.Y.) and sophomore Trevor Weingarten (Allendale, N.J.) followed with a goal assisted by Kennedy to give Bryant a 2-0 advantage with 7:09 remaining in the first quarter. Hartford answered with a goal and Bryant responded with a tally by Ziegler to lead 3-1 at the end of the first quarter. Ziegler would score again to open the second quarter – the first of five straight Bryant goals to begin the frame. Ziegler's goal was followed by Weingarten, a man-up goal from O'Rourke and a goal each from redshirt-sophomore Jake Buonaiuto (Miller Place, N.Y.) and Quigley to push the lead to its largest of the day at 8-1 with 1:23 before the half. Hartford got a second goal from Jinks to cut the halftime margin to 8-2 Bryant. The Hawks scored the first two goals of the second half and outscored the Bulldogs 5-1 in the third quarter, with a goal from O'Rourke the lone Bryant score in the frame. Hartford grabbed the first goal of the fourth quarter to cut it to a one-goal game, but Ziegler answered with two goals 1:20 apart to make it 11-8 Bryant with 10:28 to go. O'Rourke and Massa followed with goals of their own to push the advantage to 13-8 with 9:15 to go. Hartford cut it to 13-9 before goals from Buonaiuto and Kennedy made the led 15-9 with 43 seconds remaining. The Hawks cut it to the final 15-10 margin with a goal in the closing seconds. STATS Ziegler matched his career-high with four goals while adding one assist and one ground ball. Kennedy scored one goal and recorded a career-high four assists. O'Rourke matched his career-best with three goals and added an assist. Quigley and Weingarten had two goals each, matching the career-high of both. Massa added a goal and four ground balls. Graduate student Chas South (Ridgefield, Conn.) and sophomore Zach Coffey (West Newbury, Mass.) each recorded three ground balls and a caused turnover. Beimfohr made his first-career start in goal, making seven saves. GAME NOTES Bryant improves to 5-0 all-time against Hartford. The Bulldogs move to 11-5 all-time against America East members. Saturday marked the third time in four games this season that the Bulldogs have had five multi-goal scorers. UP NEXT Bryant opens up a three-game homestand Tuesday when the Bulldogs host Boston University. The 7 p.m. start can be seen on NEC Front Row.
