The #9-ranked Dickinson men's lacrosse team had a tough outing on Saturday, dropping its first of the season to #7-ranked Cabrini University, 14-8.
The Red Devils had a great start, jumping out to an early 2-0 lead as Jack O'Connell (Sands Point, N.Y./Westminster) found Joel Mayo (Glen Ellyn, Md./Berkshire) in the opening minute and finished a nice feed from Brodie Phillips (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's Belfield) at the 11:29 mark of the first quarter.
Cabrini put a goal on the board at the four-minute mark and Jakob Klein struck twice in the final 2:43 to knot the game, 3-3, at the end of the first.
Klein completed the natural hat-trick to start the second quarter and Mike Gerzabek finished Bill Morgan's second assist of the game to put the Cavaliers up, 5-2, with 3:31 to play in the half.
The Red Devils got one back as Phillips scored unassisted to cut the deficit to 5-3 at the break.
Cabrini stretched the lead to 7-3 to start the second half before Phillips scored off an assist from Matt Donnelly (Frenchtown, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional).
The Cavaliers started to gain some momentum, netting five straight goals to open a 12-4 advantage at the 1:34 mark of the third.
Nick Goles (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola-Blakefield) broke up the run, scoring off an assist from John Lockwood (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) before Cabrini tallied another with just one second left in the third to make the score 13-5.
Jordan Krug closed out the scoring for Cabrini before the Red Devils looked to make a late rally. Lockwood found Mayo and then converted on a man-up with an assist from Phillips with 5:27 remaining in regulation.
Long pole midfielder Nate Usich (Avon, Conn./Avon Old Farms) found the back of the net with 4:04 remaining but that would be as close as they would get in the 14-8 final.
Usich added four ground balls and a caused turnover on the day. Senior face-off specialist Bobby Hartwick (Brookeville, Md./Georgetown Prep) won 12-of-20 face-offs and controlled six ground balls.
Phillips led the attack with two goals and two assists, picking up four GBs on the day. Mayo struck twice while Lockwood finished with a goal and two assists.
Bobby Barroll (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School) and Spencer Hoey (Macungie, Pa./The Hill School) combined for five ground balls and four caused turnovers on the day. Jack Doran (Ardmore, Pa./Haverford School) forced three turnovers and picked up three GBs.
Junior goaltender Cole Pellicano (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) made 14 saves in the nets for Dickinson.
The Red Devils slip to 3-1 on the season. They are on the road next weekend, traveling to Roanoke College for a 2:00 pm face-off on Sunday, March 10th.
