FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Bryant University men's lacrosse team held Sacred Heart off the scoreboard for the final 33 minutes of the contest and scored the game's final 11 goals in a 16-7 victory Saturday at Campus Field. Junior Kevin Beimfohr (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) recorded a career-high 15 saves in the win for the Bulldogs. Freshman Marc O'Rourke (Hingham, Mass.) scored five goals to lead the Bryant attack, while senior Tom Kennedy (Farmingdale, N.Y.) added three goals and an assist. Graduate student Kenny Massa (Huntington, N.Y.) was 20-for-27 (.741) on face-offs in the victory. Bryant trailed 7-5 with three minutes remaining in the first half and held Sacred Heart scoreless for the remainder of the game to move to 2-0 in NEC play leading into Friday night's game at No. 20/14 Robert Morris. GAME INFORMATION Bryant 16, Sacred Heart 7 Records: Bryant (4-5, 2-0 NEC), Sacred Heart (4-5, 0-2 NEC) Location: Campus Field (Fairfield, Conn.) COACH PRESSLER'S COMMENTS "The run was twofold. Kevin Beimfohr was terrific in the cage and made some incredible one-on-one saves when we needed him most. Kenny Massa did his thing and got going on the face-off X. We made them play so much defense in the second half and I think they got a little worn down." "Kevin Beimfohr is terrific out of the goal and is getting very good in the goal. He's always been an incredible clearing goalie and a goalie that can get it out over the top, but today he was at his best between the pipes. That was an incredible second half for us on the road in our second conference game. I couldn't be more pleased with our effort, our play, our performance and the outcome." "Marc O'Rourke had five goals today, but at the end of the day, he can play better, too. He's been terrific right now and he's going to be even better as the years go by. I thought Kyle Cornell rose to the occasion, especially in between the lines, along with Tom Kennedy. Those are our two two-way workhorses in the midfield. Defensively, that whole group along with Kevin Beimfohr – just a great team effort. Last week was our best performance to date; this week is our best performance to date. We need to keep the momentum going into the Robert Morris game on the road Friday night." KEY MOMENT Bryant trailed 7-5 with three minutes remaining in the first half before goals from senior Kyle Cornell (Darien, Conn.) and O'Rourke tied the game heading into the locker room. The Bulldogs would score all nine goals in the second half. HOW IT HAPPENED Senior Tommy Vailas (Bedford, N.H.) got Bryant on the board first with 12:30 remaining in the opening quarter. Sacred Heart would respond with the next two goals. Kennedy got his first of the day with 5:28 to go but the Pioneers would hold a 3-2 lead through 15 minutes after scoring in the final minute. The teams traded man-up goals to open the second quarter with O'Rourke scoring for the Bulldogs, as Sacred Heart led 4-3 with 10:58 to go in the half. Cornell answered 31 seconds later to tie the game and an O'Rourke goal from Ziegler gave the Bulldogs a 5-4 advantage with 7:11 remaining in the half. Sacred Heart would respond with the next three goals to take its largest lead at 7-5 with 3:34 to go in the half on Max Tuttle's fourth of the day. It would be the final goal Sacred Heart scored in the contest. Goals from Cornell and O'Rourke erased the deficit before the half as the teams went to the locker room tied at seven. For the second-consecutive game, sophomore Jake Fiske (Poway, Calif.) scored a goal off the opening face-off of the second half, giving the Bulldogs the lead for good just 15 seconds into the half. Two goals from Kennedy and one from senior Cam Ziegler (Carlsbad, Calif.) pushed the advantage to 11-7 through three quarters. Ziegler added another in the first minute of the fourth quarter and O'Rourke followed 57 seconds later with his fourth of the day to put the Bulldogs ahead 13-7 with 13:13 to go. Sophomore Trevor Weingarten (Allendale, N.J.) and junior Kevin Quigley (Fairfax Station, Va.) scored 29 seconds apart to add to the lead and O'Rourke closed out the scoring with 1:53 to go for the final 16-7 margin. STATS O'Rourke scored five goals and grabbed six ground balls. The freshman has totaled 11 goals in his first two NEC games. Kennedy recorded three goals and an assist on five shots while adding two ground balls. Beimfohr made 15 saves on 22 shots on goal for a .682 save percentage. The 15 saves surpass his 12 last week against Mount St. Mary's. Massa was 20-for-27 (.741) at the face-off X and collected 16 ground balls. The graduate student is an even .700 on face-offs this season and averaging 13.75 ground balls per game - both averages rank in the top five nationally. Cornell had his first multi-goal game of the year. Bryant outshot Sacred Heart, 43-32. The Bulldogs had 38 ground balls as opposed to 24 for the Pioneers. Bryant was a perfect 16-for-16 on the clear and holds an .894 clearing percentage on the season. Saturday marked the fourth game this season in which the Black and Gold have recorded a flawless clearing percentage. GAME NOTES Bryant improves to 12-0 all-time against Sacred Heart. The Bulldogs held an opponent scoreless in a half for the first time since keeping Wagner off the board in the second half April 1, 2017. The seven goals allowed match a season best with the opener against Manhattan Feb. 3. Cornell is the 10th Bulldog to score two goals in a game this season. UP NEXT Bryant travels to Robert Morris for a game Friday in Moon Township. The 7 p.m. start can be seen on NEC Front Row.
