Lewisburg, Pa. (April 7, 2018) – Mount St. Mary's University wasn't able to overcome a slow start as the 14th-ranked Bucknell Bison downed the Mountaineers, 14-9, on Saturday night in non-conference men's lacrosse action. The Bucknell defense stymied the Mountaineers in the opening half, holding them to just eight shots and no goals while forcing 10 turnovers. Goalie Christian Klipstein made four saves in the Bucknell cage to help keep the Mount off the board. Sean O'Brien and Tommy Sopko combined for seven goals in the first half of play to propel Bucknell out to a 9-0 advantage at the halftime break. O'Brien netted his fifth goal of the game just 40 seconds into the third quarter to make it a 10-0 game, before the Mount got on track offensively to cut into the Bison lead. Stephano Mastro registered the Mount's first goal of the contest at the 11:56 mark off a feed from Chris DiPretoro. After Bucknell answered with a tally from Tom Smith just over a minute later, the Mount ripped off four straight to trim the Bison lead to six. DiPretoro tallied back-to-back goals to get the run started, and Bennett Zaba and Jack Mangan followed with scores within a two-minute span to cut the Mount deficit to 11-5. Trailing 14-6 midway through the fourth quarter, the Mount rattled off three straight goals, including a pair from DiPretoro, but the comeback ran out of time as Bucknell finished out the 14-9 victory to improve to 9-3 on the year. With the loss, the Mount dropped to 3-8 overall. DiPretoro registered his fourth straight game with three or more goals, finishing the contest with four goals and one assist for a team-high five points. Mastro, Matt Haggerty, and Henry Berg each tallied a goal and one assist in the tilt. Sam Stephan went 17-for-26 (.654) on faceoffs and picked up 11 ground balls. For Bucknell, O'Brien led the way with seven points (6g, 1a), while Sopko added three goals and Will Sands chipped in four assists. Klipstein earned the win in goal with a nine-save performance. Mount St. Mary's resumes Northeast Conference play next Saturday, April 14, with a tilt against Hobart in Emmitsburg at noon.
