The undefeated Maryland men's lacrosse team (5-0, 0-0 Big Ten) used a 4-0 run in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter to pull away from Navy (2-1, 0-0 Patriot League) and earn a 14-9 victory Saturday afternoon at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Navy closed to within two twice in the third quarter and featured an electrifying buzzer-beater at the end of the third by Christian Daniel (So / Owings, Md.), but the Terps snatched the momentum back in their favor to hold off the upset-minded Mids. "The bad news is we lost the game and didn't play well against a very good Maryland team," said Rick Sowell, who coached his 100th game at Navy on Saturday afternoon. "The good thing is that the mistakes we made, and we made a lot of them, can be fixed in my opinion. We are not that far off. I think we have to lick our wounds for today and move on to prepare for our Patriot League opener next weekend against Bucknell." While Maryland put a tally up on the scoreboard first behind a Kyle Long to Louis Dubick goal, Navy battled back to take a 3-1 lead on goals by three different players. Daniel, who has scored the first goal in each of Navy's three games this season, fought off a double team to knot the game at one apiece. Navy goalkeeper Ryan Kern (Jr / Middletown, Del.) sparked the transition game for the Mids when he came up with a save and found close defenseman Andrew McKenna (So / Stony Brook, N.Y.) streaking down the field. McKenna found short-stick midfielder Tim Griffin (So / Rockville, Md.), who fed Nick Cole (Fr / Ashburn, Va.) for the go-ahead goal. It was Griffin's first collegiate point. Navy capped off its three-goal run when All-American midfielder Greyson Torain (Sr / Glen Burnie, Md.) shredded the net with 33.6 seconds left. Maryland managed to answer before the end of the quarter with a transition goal that found Dubick wide open on the doorstep for the score with 5.5 seconds remaining, trimming Navy's lead to one (3-2) after the opening quarter. That goal, however, would be the spark the Terps needed as they went on to outscore Navy 5-1 in the second quarter and took a 7-4 lead into the locker room. The Terps pushed their lead to four when second-year attackman Logan Wisnauskas punched in a goal just 37 seconds into the third quarter. Navy's sticks came alive in the third stanza, however, and an extra-man goal by Cole triggered a 4-2 run by the Mids. Back-to-back goals just 31 seconds apart by Torain and Cole got the Mids to within two at 9-7 with 5:51 to play in the third. Maryland pushed its lead back to three (10-7) when Wisnauskas found Dubick in transition with 16.4 seconds left. Navy continued to play with the heart of a lion and a forced turnover by long pole Jeff Durden (So / Cumming, Ga.) led to a perfectly-played buzzer beater by the Mids. Durden jarred the ball loose on the defensive half of the field and Torain made the heads-up scoop before barreling down the field. Torain sent the pass to Daniel, who sent his shot top shelf from the right corner to get the Mids to within two once again at 10-8 after three quarters. For the fourth time in the game, Dubick and Wisnauskas teamed up and the Dubick goal at 12:46 in the fourth sparked a 4-0 run by the Terps. Maryland scored the four goals in 3:22 seconds which the team's leading scorer coming into the game, Jared Bernhardt, burying a pair of goals. Navy's offense eventually answered with an extra-man goal by Daniel, but both teams were without a goal over the final seven minutes of the contest. The Mids struggled mightily in the first half with turnovers (9 of their 13) and in the clearing game (6 of 12 / 13 of 19 for the game). Meanwhile, Navy's youth at faceoff also showed as the three freshmen combined to win just eight of the 26 draws. "Our faceoff game is a work in progress, but I really like what we've got," said Sowell. "We are incredibly inexperienced at that position. It was one of those days where they just had our number." Cole turned in his first collegiate hat trick and along side Torain led the Mids with four points. Torain, who posted two goals and two assists, moved into 27th on the Mids' all-time scoring list with 105 points. It's also the the sixth-most points scored by a Navy midfielder all-time. Fellow senior middie Ryan Wade (Sr / Coronado, Calif.) , who owns the nation's 11th-longest point scoring streak, extended the mark to 27 consecutive games with a point thanks to a third-quarter assist to Cole. While Sowell pointed out that, "that too much defense, sooner or later will catch up to you," third-year starting goalkeeper Ryan Kern did everything in his power to prevent it from coming true. Kern tallied 11 saves, forced three turnovers and grabbed a pair of ground balls. Maryland's high-powered offense was led by Wisnauskas who had eight points on three goals and five assists. Dubick paced the squad with five goals, while Bernhardt chipped in three goals and an assist. Sophomore Justin Shockey won 16 of the 23 draws he took and came up with seven ground balls, while Austin Henningsen won two of his three faceoffs. Keeper Danny Dolan, meanwhile, made nine saves and allowed all nine goals. The Midshipmen return to action next Saturday when they open Patriot League play at home against Bucknell (1-3). Part of a men's and women's doubleheader, the women will kick off the day with an 11:00 am contest against Florida, followed by the Navy-Bucknell men's game at 3:00 pm.
